I knew that plane was in trouble,” Cotter recalled. “It sounded like the neighborhood was exploding, it sounded like a gas explosion.” Just 12 years old at the time, Cotter had just returned home from school.

He was changing clothes to go play hockey when he heard a plane that sounded way too low.
Five seconds later, United Flight 553 slammed into the neighborhood, killing 43 of the 61 people on board.

My mother was actually in the kitchen and she saw the tail of plane go by through the kitchen window as it went through the house next door and it crashed through a row of houses across the street,” Cotter said.

The home next door and three others across the street were destroyed, killing 2 of Cotter’s neighbors. The flight was on its way from Washington D.C to Nebraska with a scheduled stop at Chicago’s Midway.

Besides Cotter’s two neighbors who were killed, the wife of a Watergate organizer, a CBS News national correspondent and a Chicago Congressman from the West Side were among the 43 people on board who died.

Dorothy Hunt was carrying $10,000 in $100 bills at the time of the crash, spawning conspiracy theories that the money was connected to Watergate and that the plane was sabotaged.
Cotter said he and his mother would have been killed had the right wing that struck the back half of their home not fallen off.
“The right wing struck a large portion, about 14 feet struck back of the house, fortunately it fell off and that is what spared my mother and I,” he said.

“Debris sprayed everywhere. Everything in my house went sideways,” Cotter said. “A piece of the airplane flew through my sisters bedroom window, which I still have this today.” For 50 years, Cotter has kept the piece in an old box, reminding him of a horrible day that now has become a very distant memory.

It was kinda of personal, it’s not like we found outside, it was in the house, so my family said let’s just keep it, it was a piece of memorabilia, it just reminds us of just how bad the experience really was,” Cotter said. Cotter may not think about the crash anymore, but the 62 year old who still lives on W.70th Place will never forget it.

Hawaiian Airlines – Running since 1929, Hawaiian is among the oldest airlines in the world but, remarkably, it has never suffered a single fatal crash or hull loss. Ploughing the skies between Hawaii, Australia, Asia and the US mainland, it still remains one of the safest carriers in the skies, coming in at number 12 in the airlineratings.com survey.

Having lived through a World War and almost a century of continuous service, the airline didn’t let the little matter of two bankruptcies in ten years (between 1993 and 2013) get in the way of its impeccable record.

However, in December 2022, at least 36 people were injured (11 of them seriously) when one of the airline’s planes experienced turbulence as it came in to land in Honolulu.

The USA’s National Transportation Safety Board is launching an investigation into the incident.

That does not mean that the airlines would not pass it if they applied for it. So, Ryanair has a very good safety record. Ryanair has never suffered a fatal air crash. The Aviation Safety Network shows thirteen Ryanair events occurring between 2007 and 2019. Twelve of these events were minor accidents, such as collisions between aircraft and ground vehicles while the aircraft were taxiing on the ground.

All of these aircraft in these eleven accidents were able to be repaired. The most significant Ryanair safety incident was in 2008 and involved a flight from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport which suffered undercarriage damage in an emergency landing at Rome-Ciampino Airport after it experienced a series of bird strikes damaging the aircraft engines.

Some crew members and passengers suffered minor injuries as the undercarriage collapsed which damaged the rear part of the aircraft fuselage. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair and was scrapped. It’s also worth reporting that around ten years ago, Ryanair was involved in a controversy over fuel levels.

In 2012, three Ryanair aircraft inbound to Madrid Barajas Airport were diverted to Valencia Airport due to an outbreak of severe thunderstorms near Madrid. All three aircraft declared Mayday emergencies when the calculated usable fuel on landing at Valencia Airport was less than the accepted final reserve level (30 minutes of flight) after having been held in the air for around an hour.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) investigated the incidents and broadly concluded that the aircraft departed for Madrid with fuel in excess of their flight plan requirements and with fuel in excess of the minimum diversion fuel depicted on the flight plans. It also concluded that the initial aircraft holding requirement close to Madrid increased the diversion time to Valencia Airport and that the weather conditions in Madrid were more significant than anticipated by the flight crew when they reviewed the weather forecast.

The IAA made a number of recommendations, including that Ryanair should review its fuel policy and consider issuing guidance to its flight crew with respect to fuel when operating to busy airports. The Spanish Civil Aviation Accident and Investigation Commission (CIAIAC) concluded that Ryanair’s fuel-saving policy complies with the minimum legal requirements, but tends to minimize the amount of operational fuel and leaves none beyond legal minimums.

The Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision occurred on 12 November 1996 over the village of Charkhi Dadri, to the west of New Delhi, India.
The aircraft involved were a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747-100B en route from Delhi to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and a Kazakhstan Airlines Ilyushin Il-76 en route from Chimkent, Kazakhstan, to Delhi.

Air India Flight 182 was an Air India flight operating on the Vancouver–Toronto–Montreal–London–Delhi route. On 23 June 1985, the Boeing 747-237B serving the flight (c/n 21473/330, registration VT-EFO, ‘Emperor Kanishka’) was destroyed by a bomb at an altitude of 31,000 feet (9,400 m).

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17/MAS17) was a scheduled passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down on 17 July 2014 while flying over eastern Ukraine, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board.

As part of the settlement, the United States did not admit legal liability or formally apologize to Iran but agreed to pay on an ex gratia basis US$61.8 million, amounting to $213,103.45 per passenger, in compensation to the families of the Iranian victims. The 2003 Iran Ilyushin Il-76 crash occurred on 19 February 2003, when an Ilyushin Il-76 crashed in mountainous terrain near Kerman in Iran.

The Aerospace Force of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution aircraft, registration 15-2280, was flying from Zahedan to Kerman when it crashed 35 kilometers (22 mi) southeast of Kerman.
