Does Boeing make space shuttles?

Spacecraft characteristics – Starliner mockup, capsule without service module Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft is designed to accommodate seven passengers, or a mix of crew and cargo, for missions to low Earth orbit. For the NASA service missions to the ISS, it will carry four passengers and small cargo.

  1. Starliner uses a weldless structure and is reusable up to 10 times with a six-month turnaround time.
  2. Boeing plans to alternate between two reusable crew modules for all planned Starliner missions.
  3. Each flight uses a new service module, which provides propulsion and power-generation capacity for the spacecraft.

It features wireless Internet and tablet technology for crew interfaces. Starliner uses the NASA Docking System for docking. Boeing modified the design of the Starliner docking system prior to OFT-2, adding a hinged re-entry cover below the expendable nosecone for additional protection during the capsule’s fiery descent through the atmosphere, similar to the one used in the SpaceX Dragon 2 nosecone.

This was tested on the OFT-2 mission. This re-entry cover is hinged, like the SpaceX design. The capsule uses the Boeing Lightweight Ablator for its heat shield, Solar cells, provided by Boeing subsidiary Spectrolab, are installed onto the aft face of the spacecraft’s service module, and provide 2.9 kW of electricity.

Also on the service module are four Rocketdyne RS-88 engines burning hypergolic propellants, which will be used for launch escape capability in the event of an abort. Starliner is designed to be compatible with multiple launch vehicles, including the Atlas V, Delta IV, and Falcon 9, as well as the in-development Vulcan Centaur,

With its 14 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelength region and its high spatial resolution of about 50 to 300 feet (15 to 90 meters), ASTER images Earth to map and monitor the changing surface of our planet.

ASTER is one of five Earth-observing instruments launched Dec.18, 1999, on Terra. The instrument was built by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. A joint U.S./Japan science team is responsible for validation and calibration of the instrument and data products.

The broad spectral coverage and high spectral resolution of ASTER provides scientists in numerous disciplines with critical information for surface mapping and monitoring of dynamic conditions and temporal change. Example applications are monitoring glacial advances and retreats; monitoring potentially active volcanoes; identifying crop stress; determining cloud morphology and physical properties; wetlands evaluation; thermal pollution monitoring; coral reef degradation; surface temperature mapping of soils and geology; and measuring surface heat balance.

The U.S. science team is located at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The Terra mission is part of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Washington. More information about ASTER is available at, : Boeing Plant, Everett WA

Do you tip a seaplane pilot?

Hi DJWiley, Congrats on your first ever bush plane adventure! It will get into your bones, and you will be ready for another one after this trip! Don’t tip the pilot. Its not a cab ride. It’s a business contract. This is big money and standard business in the north. I have never heard in all my tripping years, and from reading the literature, of any requirement or expectation for tipping a pilot. I know it happens, but it should not be happening.

  • As has been mentioned already, fares for canoe trip hauls are very expensive, and the cost of doing business has already been factored into your price and then some, and pilots are highly trained professionals.
  • I would consider it an insult to the pilot to offer him/her a cash tip.
  • Instead a genuine verbal “Thank you” is expected.

Flying is special – you are defying gravity, and travelling in a very special machine that is owned, maintained, and flown by a different breed. Aviation is almost always a deep love of business and profession. Respect for and courtesy to the pilot is you job.

Respect involves showing up early and being totally ready. In almost every flight I have chartered, when I show up early they appreciate it, and will often load you up and leave early so that they can do another run earlier, or add another fare that afternoon that they could not have fit in otherwise, they make more money, and the pilot gets home at a decent hour.

Respect also includes offering to do the heavy lifting of packs up into the plane from the dock. Pilots can suffer back injuries because of the ergonomics they have to deal with. If they can place themselves in the plane, and you can lift the packs up to them so that they don’t have to strain their backs, this is highly appreciated.

But always ask how they would like to load – the pilot is always the boss – you are the helper. But don’t be an injury statistic yourself either. Always ask how you can help, don’t throw yourself into an unsafe lifting situation. The pilot also does the boat tie on. Don’t touch the ropes or straps – they have to do this themselves.

You can help lift the boat onto the struts when the pilot asks you to (sometimes dock hands do this). Basically, make yourself available and useful for the loading, but follow instructions and don’t get in the way. Float plane companies, and pilot-owner/operators will also work barter systems with their clients in the neighbourhood as all small private businesses do, and you don’t need to worry about this.e.g.

They might fly in some supplies on a pick up run to a lodge on the way to pick you up at the end of your trip. The lodge in turn will compensate the company, and you have no cash involved. But your fare facilitated their extra business that day to fill the plane both ways. Let business operate and help them get business, including good word of mouth referrals to your canoeing buddies and on line here if you received good service, but don’t pollute it with cash “tips”.

If it’s a healthy competitive business climate, you can reduce your fare by doing research ahead of time to fill an empty backhaul for another client. That provides the float plane company more business, earns them more money, reduces your fare, and you as the client made it happen.

  • You become a valued customer, and you may see that reflected in your next quote from the company on your next canoe trip.
  • On the other hand, if its not a healthy competitive business climate, you can be gouged.
  • Tipping when also being gouged is a double insult to you, and hurts fellow paddlers because of your encouragement.

If pilots are expected to be tipped, then companies may pay them less, and it becomes a downward spiral. Young pilots are not paid very much, so don’t encourage their employers to pay them less. Its just all round better not to be tipping and influencing bad business practices in aviation.

  1. Let business operate in a healthy competitive environment.
  2. Your fare allows pilots trips to the remotest places in the north, seeing the most magnificent scenery on the planet and they sometimes get fringe benefits out of it (if they have good employers), such as some of the greatest fishing and hunting opportunities imaginable.

They also get worked very hard sometimes when money is tight and they have to work long hours. Hence the best thing you can do for them is to show up early, pack well (e.g. tape up loose ends into bundles or duffels, or better yet don’t have loose ends), and make yourself useful, and pass on good referrals for good service. (uh.I forgot to mention that depending on your flight distance, do NOT drink lots of liquids before you go, empty that bladder. Being slightly dehydrated is way better than the reverse. You may want to consider using Gravol appropriately (if medically OK with you), if you are a shaky flier (I am). ).
