Why are people leaving Redding CA?

Everywhere I go lately I learn about another family that has left the Redding area, often for another state. Their reasons include crime rates, the homeless, drug use, high state taxes, onerous regulations and an increasing sense that the California cultural and political climate has become hostile to their values. Those leaving are decent, hard-working people, and seemingly include all ages, from young families to retirees. I am concerned about the impact this is having on our social and economic capital. Are they being replenished by new arrivals to the area? Perhaps of equal importance: If confidence in the future of our community has eroded to the point that many are looking to leave, how likely are we that remain to make investments in our civic life? Personally, over the past few years my opinion of Redding (and California for that matter) has degraded to the point where I can no longer envision it a long-term home. However, owing to family and business ties, I will be here for the foreseeable future, so I’m interested in solutions that will improve our community. Why is Redding so hot in summer?

Why are summers so darn hot in Redding? I asked Scott Mobley, former weather expert for the Record Searchlight, who now lives in Portland. His response: Hi Marc, Hope you can escape to the coast! You’ve already endured a pretty brutal summer, probably the worst since 2009 or even 2006.

  • Here’s my take on Redding summers: Redding routinely experiences the hottest summer temperatures anywhere in California north of the Mojave Desert.
  • Daily maximums in Redding often top out a few degrees higher than other notoriously broiling Central Valley cities like Fresno and Bakersfield, even though these places are farther south with higher sun angles.

Daily maximum temperatures above 90 degrees are the rule in Redding from about early June well into October. Triple digit afternoons are common from about late June through at least mid-September. In a typical summer temps will hit 100 degrees or higher at least a couple dozen times.

Redding’s triple-digit tally so far this summer stands at 28 days as of July 20. The Redding area is also infamous for enduring many consecutive days with triple-digit heat. Strings of 10 to 14 days are fairly common. The longest streak on record for Redding is 26 days in July and August, 1978. The city has recorded 100-degree heat as early as May 4 and as late as Oct.14.

The highest temperature on record in Redding – 118 degrees – is a mark hit not just once but on three afternoons, most recently in July 1988. Still, Red Bluff, which hit 121 degrees in August 1981, holds the region’s all-time top temperature. Why such heat? Blame the scenery.

  • The mountains that give Redding its rugged backdrop also wall it off from any tempering ocean influence.
  • Breezes fanning out from the Sacramento/San Joaquin delta will dramatically cool Sacramento, Stockton and other inland cities.
  • These winds have typically lost most of their coolant by the time they’ve traveled 160 miles up the valley to Shasta County.

But the Delta Breeze does influence summer temperatures even in the far northern valley. You can tell when the wind arrives – the air turns hazier, tinged with agricultural dust and what little humidity survives the long, dry trip. During a heat wave earlier this summer, a forecast of 115 degrees went bust when a robust Delta Breeze capped temperatures at 110 degrees before pushing them back into the mid-90s.

In Redding, mid-90s spell relief. During periods of extreme heat across interior Northern California, prevailing winds typically blow from the north, down the Klamath Mountain slopes into the far northern valley. These winds warm and dry with compression as they descend toward the valley floor, heating up much the way a bicycle pump tube gets hot to the touch with repeated use.

The Redding area is more prone to this so-called adiabatic warming than any other in Northern California. Winds in Redding are blowing down slope from most directions, thanks to the city’s location at the head of a mountain horseshoe. So it’s no surprise Redding experiences its most intense heat during such down slope wind episodes.

These winds may keep temperatures in the 80s or even the low 90s through the night. Down slope winds are largely responsible for the “dry heat” about which Redding city boosters sometimes boast. Dew point temperatures – a measure of how “sticky” or heavy the air feels – may drop into the 30s or lower as northern Sacramento Valley temperatures soar.

But sometimes upper-air circulation draws more humid, subtropical air across Northern California and the heat may feel particularly painful. Monitor dew point temperatures on such days. Generally, readings 55 degrees or higher are considered uncomfortable – especially when air temperature climbs above 100 degrees.

REDDING – A hundred years ago, Mark Twain headed the list of the rich and famous who called Redding their home. In more recent times, headliners living there included folk singer Mary Travers, movie producer Barry Levinson and former financial products executive Jake DeSantis, who may be forever known in some quarters as “the AIG guy.” More than 9,300 other people reside in this community, not all of them famous and not all of them necessarily rich, but according to the latest issue of Money magazine, decidedly better off than most people.

The annual median family income of $141,609 in Redding last year, and the median home price of $625,000 combined to place the town fourth among the 28 wealthiest communities in the country, the magazine reported. But the magazine left Redding off another, better-known list in the same issue, “The Top 100 Places to Live in America.” Redding was “a contender,” but didn’t make the final cut, the magazine reported.

“It was an incredible oversight on their part,” said Anne Andrews, who moved to Redding with her husband, Eric, 11 years ago. “I absolutely love it here,” she said. “It’s a little laid-back from other Fairfield County towns. The schools are great, the town government is great, and it’s beautiful place.” Weekend resident Barbara Baldwin called the criteria that resulted in Redding not making the Top 100 list “ridiculous.” Baldwin and her husband, who are from New York, bought their getaway place 10 years ago on the recommendation of a friend who also had a weekend home in town.

“I love it here, although I admit I’m not all that involved in the day-to-day activity,” she said. Other Reddingites, however, preferred to consider the slight as a positive. “Thank God, they kept us off. I’m glad they missed us,” said Stephanie Klein, a college consultant who moved to town five years ago from South Salem, N.Y., after she and her husband fell in love with a house on Long Meadow Lane.

“It offers something that’s rare in Fairfield County,” Klein said. “It’s not needing to drive a bigger car than my neighbor. People here are laid-back and not concerned with keeping up with the Joneses, They’re down to earth.” Wine importer Michael Miller feigned outrage over the Money oversight before turning serious and listing what he likes best about the place he and his wife, Meredith, have called home for the past seven years.

When he first moved to Redding, Miller recalled, he got a sweatshirt emblazoned with the slogan “Redding, the Best Small Town in America,” on the front. On the back it said simply, “SHHHH.” “I like that there are no traffic lights. We go to the ice cream parlor, Swirl, in Georgetown, and we know everybody.

The concerts on the Green on Sunday are free,” Miller said. If he could talk to the editors at Money, Miller would tell them, “Thanks a lot, thank you for not putting us in there. It’s better to be insulated and go through life anonymous.” But maybe 50-year Redding resident and former First Selectman Mary Ann Guitar summarized it best.
