Akron-Canton Airport faces uncertain timetable for Delta’s return Even as it prepares to unveil a new concourse later this week, Akron-Canton Airport is struggling to get flights with a key airline back off the ground. Delta Air Lines first suspended flights in May at the Green airport when the coronavirus pandemic hit and later continued the suspension at Akron-Canton and 15 other airports indefinitely.

Worry has begun to grip some of the affected airports.
The Union Leader (N.H.) reported last week that the airline wouldn’t resume flights at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in the spring and suggested Delta might not return at all.

But Akron-Canton Airport Director of Marketing and Air Service Development Lisa Dalpiaz said Tuesday the airline has indicated it will return to Green when passenger demand returns.

“They pulled out and they haven’t discontinued service permanently,” Dalpiaz said. She said airport and Delta officials discussed the airline’s plans a couple of weeks ago, but no time frame was given for a return. Dalpiaz said the airline has removed its equipment from Akron-Canton while its operations are suspended to save costs.

The airport is hoping to lure Delta back with a established by Jobs Ohio and municipalities near the airport.

Delta, however, isn’t giving any indication about when it might return.
At this time we do not have a date to resume service to Akron-Canton,” the airline said in a statement on Tuesday.
We are continuously monitoring demand trends and are rebuilding our network as demand resumes.” It’s the same statement they’ve given for weeks about returning service to airports where it’s been suspended.

Dalpiaz, though, is confident that the nation’s No.2 airline will fly again in Green, although she can’t say when service will resume. “When we start seeing corporate travelers come back, will come back,” Dalpiaz said. Other airlines continue to operate at Akron-Canton as passenger demand increases from the lows of early spring.

Dalpiaz said she expects October’s numbers, which haven’t yet been reported, to level off.”After kids go back to school historically it slows down until March,” she said.Currently, the airport’s destinations to Florida are popular, with flights to Tampa and Fort Meyers starting again this week on Spirit Airlines.

“It looks like people are ready to get down to Florida,” Dalpiaz said. The airport is also bracing for new coronavirus mandates from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. During the initial shutdowns in the spring, the airport remained open as an essential business. If the governor imposes new restrictions, the airport will make adjustments, Dalpiaz said. “If dining has to be done takeout, we’ll go to that model,” she said. Since the onset of the pandemic, the airport has implemented a number of cleaning protocols to reduce the chance of COVID-19 infections. The U.S. Department of Transportation considers Akron-Canton part of the same regional market as Cleveland Hopkins. Delta is Akron-Canton’s third largest carrier, carrying about 20% of the airport’s 835,000 passengers in 2019.

Delta flies solely to Atlanta from Akron-Canton, and is the only carrier offering service from CAK to Hartsfield-Jackson International, the world’s largest airport.
The suspension of flights starts Wednesday.
Said Delta, in its announcement: “These changes will allow more of our frontline employees to minimize their COVID-19 exposure risk while ensuring convenient access to Delta’s network for those who must travel.

Delta will continue providing essential service to impacted communities via neighboring airports.” Lisa Dalpiaz, director of marketing and air service development at CAK, said United and American airlines continue to fly from Akron-Canton, providing “domestic and global connectivity for essential travel.” In a letter to the U.S.

Department of Transportation in early April, CAK officials argued that Akron-Canton should be considered a separate market and expressed concern that the airport would lose out to Cleveland if airlines were permitted to choose between the two airports. “If given the option to pick either CAK or CLE – but not required by any obligation to separately serve the different markets of both, the public served by CAK will undoubtedly suffer by immediate or significantly greater loss of service with the order as written,” said the April 2 letter.

“The purpose of the service obligation is to assure that communities do not lose their air service. The impact from combining CLE and CAK will not serve that purpose and will cause a real practical loss of air service – particularly in the areas south of Akron including along the Interstate Route 77 corridor.” It added, “The consequences of aviation transportation decisions made today in the face of the pandemic and its disruptions can and most certainly will have repercussions that will be material and long lasting.

The viability and importance of airports like the Akron-Canton Regional Airport should not be viewed lightly at this critical time.” Delta is also suspending service to numerous other smaller airports near big cities, including Chicago Midway; Oakland, Hollywood Burbank and Long Beach in California; Providence, Rhode Island; Manchester, New Hampshire; Westchester County and Stewart International in New York; and Newport News/Williamsburg in Virginia.
