Will Delta return to Flint?

Bishop International Airport CEO expects business to take off as economy recovers By | on March 26, 2022 BY JEFF HOGAN 810-452-2640 • [email protected] Nino Sapone was the guest speaker Thursday afternoon at a luncheon meeting of the Economic Club of Lapeer County, an off-shoot function of the Lapeer Development Corporation.

  1. ELBA TWP. — More than 2,000 people have been flying from Bishop International Airport daily in recent months.
  2. The airport is expected to remain busy through May as area residents book flights to warm-weather destinations for spring break.
  3. Many people are flying with Allegiant Air that has established an operational base at the airport.

Airport CEO Nino Sapone on Thursday was the first luncheon speaker of the year at the Economic Club of Lapeer County, held at the Lapeer Country Club in Elba Township. He offered an update on activities at the airport, including economic development opportunities administrators are pursuing for airportowned property on the grounds of the airport located near the I-69/I-75 interchange in Flint.

  • Right now, spring break travel is doing really well for us.
  • We’re up 30% in the last few weeks, and year-to-date we’re up 42%,” said Sapone, who has been the airport CEO since October 2019.
  • He had previously served as the airport’s interim airport director.
  • Prior to landing the position in Flint, Sapone served as the vice president of airport operations at Pittsburg International Airport.

He has more than 25 years of aviation industry experience, is an accredited airport executive through the American Association of Airport Executives, and has served as president for the northeast chapter of the organization. “Despite the labor shortage that continues to hinder airline operations, we’re doing really well and I expect it will just keep improving when the airlines can hire more people to crew their planes and operations,” Sapone told the Econ Club audience.

  1. Passenger airlines currently flying from Bishop International Airport include Allegiant, American and United.
  2. They’re trying to get Delta to return to Flint, but Sapone isn’t confident that will happen.
  3. Allegiant, which accounts for more than half of all passenger traffic at Bishop, has established an aircraft and crew base at the airport — a $75 million investment at the airport that was expected to create nearly 90 good-paying jobs.

Allegiant Air, which began operating at Bishop in 2016, will base three aircraft at the airport. As a result of the long-term commitment to house three aircraft at Flint, Allegiant had to hire more pilots, flight attendants, maintenance technicians, administrative and ground support staff.

The planes fly their routes each day and come back to Bishop International at night. The crews like that,” said Sapone, though added due to a continued shortage of employees Allegiant is sharing crews with planes that fly from Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids. This month, Allegiant Air added flights from Flint to Boston, Jacksonville, Fla.

and Savannah/Hilton Head in Georgia. “We’re very excited to offer flights to Boston. We’re trying to get more flights into the Northeast and to the West as well,” said Sapone. In addition to more and new flight destinations available via Allegiant and the other airlines at Bishop, other activities and improvements include two electric-vehicle charging stations in the east parking lot as well as Grand Blanc-based Cinnamom Bakery to open soon in the terminal.

  1. Phase II of capital improvements at the airport, said Sapone, may include construction of a lounge to overlook the airfield.
  2. Perimeter property around the airfield may also be developed, including new hangar construction.
  3. Sapone said there’s some interest to locate an electric plane manufacturing facility on a 77-acre parcel.

“There’s a lot of potential. It’s going to grow, and we’re always looking to get more carriers,” said Sapone. Future speaker schedule • Congresswoman Lisa McClain, R-Romeo, will be the guest speaker on Thursday, April 21. McClain represents the 10th Congressional District that includes Lapeer County.

What percentage of Delta flights are getting Cancelled?

Know which airlines actually arrive on schedule – While past performance doesn’t guarantee future performance, it’s at least a good indicator. NerdWallet analyzed BTS arrival data between January and April 2022 for the 10 largest U.S. airlines by passenger miles to determine each airline’s on-time arrivals rate.

Percent of on-time flights Percent of delayed flights Percent of canceled flights
Delta Air Lines 82%. 16%. 2%.
Hawaiian Airlines 82%. 16%. 1%.
SkyWest Airlines (Delta regional airline) 79%. 17%. 3%.
American Airlines 78%. 18%. 4%.
United Airlines 78%. 19%. 2%.
Alaska Airlines 77%. 19%. 4%.
Southwest Airlines 74%. 22%. 4%.
Spirit Airlines 68%. 27%. 5%.
Frontier Airlines 63%. 32%. 4%.
JetBlue Airways 60%. 33%. 7%.

If timeliness is a priority, consider booking Delta or Hawaiian, which arrived on time 82% of the time. Skip JetBlue, which only landed on schedule 60% of the time. Air carrier problems — meaning the issue was due to circumstances within the airline’s control, such as maintenance, cleaning, baggage loading or fueling delays — were the top cause of late arrivals for the first four months of 2022, accounting for nearly 8% of delays.
