Passengers can fly to states around the country or to destinations in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America, and more from O’Hare, making it a common stop for a layover if their journey doesn’t begin here. There are four terminals at O’Hare — Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and Terminal 5 — and each has a range of dining and shopping options.

Is it better to fly into Midway or O Hare?
Midway Airport – Compared to O’Hare, Midway is a much smaller international airport, and it only carries a few airlines. Midway generally operates Southwest Airlines flights and it is much smaller and less busy than O’Hare. The advantage of traveling through Midway is that it is much closer to the city.
- It can take 15 to 25 minutes from Midway to downtown, as the distance is shorter and the traffic surrounding this airport is much lighter.
- Overall, due to its size and location Midway can be the more efficient and fast choice for those quick, domestic business travelers who are looking to be in and out, and who do not require many airport amenities.
If you plan on taking a public vehicle expect to pay around $45 from Midway to downtown. On the downside, Midway’s location is seen as a bit dangerous and not as safe as the O’Hare location. This can be a very important factor for those new Chicago visitors and those who plan to take public transportation after their flight.

If you arrive on a domestic flight and must connect to an international flight, you have two options: 1.) you can take the ATS and pass through the security checkpoint in Terminal 5 or 2.) you can take a Terminal Transfer Bus (TTB) from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5 and bypass the security checkpoint in Terminal 5.
The Terminal Transfer Bus service is year round with operation hours as follows: 11:00 am – 9:00 pm. If you are arriving into the domestic terminals and need to collect your luggage (exit the security side of the airport) and recheck in T5, you will not be able to use this service.
TTB SERVICE HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENEDED – TTB service takes travelers from the domestic terminals (1, 2, & 3) to Terminal 5 without having to exit security or be rescreened in Terminal 5 at the TSA checkpoint. If you arrive at O’Hare on an international flight and have a connecting domestic flight, you will arrive at Terminal 5 and will need to take the ATS to the domestic terminals.

Who flies out of Terminal 1 at O Hare?
Terminals – 
Terminal 1 at O’Hare is the hub for United Airlines’ domestic flights and hosts a United Club. It has two concourses––B and C––and 50 gates. There are a range of food options in Terminal 1, from hot dogs and McDonald’s to a wine bar, dine-in restaurants such as Chili’s Too and Berghoff Cafe, and to-go kiosks and vending machines.
- Barbara’s Bookstore, Duty Free, and Hudson News & Gifts are the main shopping options in the terminal.
- If you have time the Terminal Gateway Spa (also in Terminal 3) offers quick manicures and pedicures, massages and more.
- In Terminal 2, you’ll find 41 gates in Concourses E and F.
- This terminal is home to a similar range of food options, from kiosks to dine-in, though this terminal has a sports bar instead of a wine bar.
The shopping options are also similar to Terminal 2. This terminal has the only barber shop in the airport. Terminal 3 is the largest terminal at O’Hare, with 79 gates in Concourses G, H, K and L. Its main airlines are American Airlines and Spirit Airlines, though it also hosts several regional airlines.
- There is a smoothie and salad shop, a bakery, bagel shop, multiple vending machines, a Mexican restaurant, a burger spot, a Chicago Cubs bar, Goose Island Beer Company bar, and more in Terminal 3.
- The shopping options are the same as other terminals, with the addition of a Brooks Brothers and Brookstone.
This terminal has the airport’s only Yoga Room, in the rotunda mezzanine. The international terminal, Terminal 5, is home to all major international airlines and has 21 gates in Concourse M. It has 18 dining options, including a Burger King, McDonald’s, Dunkin’, salad restaurant, a sports bar, outposts of popular Chicago restaurants, and more.
Shopping options are the same as Terminal 3, with a Dufry instead of a Brookstone, and an ‘I Love Chicago’ souvenir shop. All terminals have bathrooms (including all gender options), drinking fountains, baby changing stations and ATMs. All terminals also have a Mother’s Room, a private space for nursing that is open 24 hours.
Terminal 2 has separate, Mamava private nursing pods.

Last updated in 2019, Megahubs provides fresh insights into how ongoing air travel disruption has affected global connectivity over the past three years. A strong domestic aviation market propelled U.S. airports to dominate Megahubs this year. Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD) moved up from its third-place 2019 ranking and is now the #1 most internationally connected airport in the world and leads North America for the fifth consecutive time.
On the busiest day of aviation at ORD, there were 43,350 possible connections within a six-hour window, compared to 65,294 in 2019. O’Hare is followed globally by Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Atlanta (ATL), Seattle (SEA), Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), and New York John F.

- In total, 18 U.S.
- Airports landed on the Top 50 with 13 taking the top 20 spots.

United Airlines owns 46% of flights at O’Hare (down 2% from 2019) and American Airlines owns 85% at Dallas/Fort Worth. Delta Airlines has a 77% share of flights at Atlanta. Eight U.S. airports also landed on the Top 25 Low-Cost Carrier Megahubs list, with Denver International Airport (DEN) ranking third overall – up from its #55 ranking in 2019 – due to the strong presence of Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines.
United Airlines is the dominant carrier at DEN, with a 52% share of flights. London Heathrow (LHR) dropped to #22 globally after ranking as the #1 most internationally connected airport in 2019. The number of possible connections on the busiest day of aviation at LHR has fallen by 40% as a result of schedule reductions which affected high frequency short-haul routes.
Mexico City Juarez International Airport (MEX) is now the highest ranked non-U.S. Megahub, which came in #8 globally. Megahubs is created using OAG’s of the most comprehensive airlines schedules and global flight connections database in the world. Fight connectivity is based on regional location and airline type.
Rankings include the dominant airline at each hub and the share of flights operated by that carrier. In some instances during recovery, flight and destination combinations have been radically changed, leading to notable names missing in Megahubs 2022.

This is O’Hare’s first return to the top spot in OAG’s rankings since 2016. Last month, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg joined Mayor Lightfoot and Commissioner Rhee at O’Hare to announce that an FAA environmental review found there is “no significant impact” of the proposed Terminal Area Plan (TAP) from the CDA, paving the way to start construction on two new satellite concourses at O’Hare, the new O’Hare Global Terminal that will replace Terminal 2, and other associated projects.
- The TAP is a critical component of O’Hare 21, an ongoing investment in the airport’s terminals that will further support the breadth of air service that makes O’Hare one of the world’s busiest airports.

Another major component of O’Hare 21, the $1 billion expansion and modernization of Terminal 5, is nearing completion. This October, Delta Air Lines shifted operations from its longtime home in Terminal 2 to newly renovated gates in Terminal 5 and opened its brand new Sky Club lounge.
