Things looked up at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport in 2021, but the cloudy skies still haven’t cleared. The airport attracted 156,786 departing passengers last year, up 41.5% from 2020 when COVID-19 decimated air travel. That’s still barely half its 2019 record of 296,632 departures.

The pandemic continues to thwart a full recovery, airport Executive Director Carl Beardsley Jr. said. “I don’t think there’s any question about (that),” Beardsley said. “You have business flyers who don’t necessarily want to go (anywhere), but I’m very encouraged by the fact that we are growing right now because there are many airports that aren’t seeing this level of growth.” Before the pandemic began in March 2020, the airport broke monthly departure records in 16 of the preceding 19 months and appeared well on its way to achieving projections of more than 335,000 passengers a year by 2035.

Beardsley acknowledged the airport probably won’t return to 2019 departure levels without adding a third major airline. In the midst of 2020, Delta Air Lines suspended its flights to its Atlanta hub in April 2020 and its Detroit flights that July. He isn’t hopeful Delta will return, at least not anytime soon.

Nine airports in the eastern United States, including Erie’s, lost United flights to either Chicago or Newark. Beardsley is trying to drum up new service by seeking outside help. In December, the airport board hired Volaire Aviation of Fishers, Indiana, for up to $100,000 to come up with a strategy to attract new air service.

It’s going to take working with the airlines to make sure they understand that we’re a market that can bring in additional customers for them and make them profitable,” Beardsley said. “It’s very important that we work with the business community, to make sure that we gather all the support we can from the business people in this area,

to bring in additional passengers and customers.” Kevin J. Schorr, a vice president with Campbell-Hill Aviation Group, which also helps airports develop new service, said the local airport is like other small, regional airports. The struggle to regain passengers centers largely on the lack of available pilots for the regional jets that serve airlines like United and American, the local airport’s remaining airlines.

“Scranton is definitely not in the minority,” Schorr said. “I mean, that’s the crux of it. There’s shortages of everything nowadays. But the key thing is not enough pilots to fly all the hours that United, Delta and American wants from their regional (jet) partners. “So they’re making really tough choices.

In some cases, just reducing (flight) frequencies, but in some cases, dropping a route, or dropping an airport entirely, like you saw with Delta.”
