The voice recorder has also been recovered.
They have given up hope of finding any survivors.
Now the focus was on finding any clues as to how this tragedy happened.

The government has set up a panel to investigate the cause of the disaster and the prime minister declared Monday a national day of mourning.

Are there COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens?

Travelers entering Nepal from abroad by air or land must submit a certificate of full vaccination against COVID-19. Travelers are considered fully vaccinated 14 days after receiving the last recommended dose of vaccine prior to arrival in Nepal. A booster dose is not needed to meet this requirement. Travelers who are fully vaccinated must carry their official vaccination certificate and be prepared to show it immediately upon disembarkation and at the further request of Government of Nepal officials. Travelers who are unable to provide such certificate must present a negative COVID-19 test report taken within 72 hours of departure from the port of embarkment. Vaccine card/covid test will not be mandatory for children below 5 years of age. The Department of Immigration rescinded all previously issued orders regarding country-specific travel limitations as of March 10, 2022. All travelers regardless of vaccine status can receive on-arrival visas at the port of entry. Amendments to existing orders and new orders may be promulgated with little notice. Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry?

Fully vaccinated travelers do not need COVID-19 testing, if not fully vaccinated, you must obtain a negative PCR test not more than 72 hours before your flight of first departure to enter Nepal and should then be able to obtain a visa on arrival. Travelers departing Nepal by air are subject to health protocols of their destination country only. Airlines will consult and apply such protocols before boarding passengers. The airlines are responsible for ensuring each passengers have the tests as per requirement of destined country. Please consult with your airlines prior to your arrival and departure from Nepal. Please check with your airline regarding future flight availability and any necessary flight re-bookings. Operation of cargo flights, rescue flights, and evacuation flights will be carried out subject to special permission.

Why do planes not fly over Nepal?

What are the causes of Nepal’s poor safety record? – A combination of factors have led to Nepal’s worrying record. AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas lists three key reasons, including “treacherous flying conditions in and around the Himalayas”, sometimes “substandard pilot training and thus skills”, plus “poor and dangerous airports which are often below world standards due to the mountainous terrain.” In addition to Everest, the country is home to seven of the world’s highest mountains, which makes it uniquely hazardous for pilots, who must navigate both the peaks and rapidly changing weather.

Back in 2015, the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization prioritised the country for technical assistance, subsequently stating its “beautiful but rugged terrain makes the safety of air operations more challenging than in other areas of the world.” Mountainous airports generally have shorter runways, which require higher pilot skill and can only accommodate smaller, less reliable aircraft.

Nepal’s Lukla Airport, the gateway to the Everest region, has previously been dubbed the world’s most dangerous, an unwelcome but unsurprising title given its accident rate. The airport’s runway is just 1,729 feet long (Heathrow’s shortest is 12,008 feet) and ends abruptly at a brick wall.

With rising mountains all around there is little opportunity for an aborted landing so pilots must get it right the first time. The airport’s altitude also means the air is thinner so planes have no choice but to arrive faster, too. As Nepal remains one of the poorest countries in Asia, it’s unsurprising that some of its airlines have ageing fleets and its pilot training programmes might not rival those of western countries.

Industry insiders have observed some older planes don’t even have GPS systems. Still, the Yeti Airlines aircraft involved in the latest crash was only 15 years old – a fairly typical age for a commercial plane. Some feel Nepalese authorities could do more to increase safety in the skies.
