Which meals are served on long flights and in what order? Your best source of this information is your airline’s website, even if you didn’t book with them. For example, says: Economy Class intercontinental On all KLM intercontinental flights, we welcome you on board with a beverage of choice.

I’ll typically be offered a meal 1-2 hours after getting on the plane and I don’t see how it can be any less time than that. If the flight is only four hours, there really isn’t a way to do two meal services, because after the meal they need to come by and collect the garbage, then do another drink run, so they would run out of time.

(The quote above is about intercontinental flights, which are probably all over 4 hours.) But on a six or eight hour flight, they can do it all again and they typically do. On a 14 hour flight LAX-SYD, United served food three times, though the middle one was just a sandwich. It’s much quicker to hand somebody a wrapped item than to ask what they want, put the hot thing on a tray of prepared cold things, pass them the tray which they have to take carefully, etc.

Trays also have to be collected afterwards. That said, most European carriers offer a meal service with trays even on a 90 minute flight. They do so by offering food and drinks at the same time – and with a smaller plane it doesn’t take as long to “do” the whole plane.

How do I know if a meal is served on my flight?

And in the last year, the offering available to passengers, particularly out of Manchester, Gatwick and Stansted has moved up a gear. Finally leisure passengers are being targeted by the airports for some TLC before their flights. Take Manchester Airport for example.

1. For many years you have been able to buy your way into lounges run by ground handling agents such as Servisair.
2. The cost is around the £18 mark per person.
3. These lounges are designed for business travellers and are operated on behalf of airlines in order to give their business passengers a comfortable lounge to work in.

Free drinks and some snacks, a location to connect your laptop or read a magazine ahead of the flight out to a business meeting or on your way back to the office. Functional but hardly aimed at leisure travellers. But earlier this year, the airport management upped the ante considerably, by opening new lounges in Terminals 1 and 2 called Escape.

1. And what lounges they are – decorated in rich colours with lots of gorgeous fabrics and drapes, the lounge in Terminal 1 is a real haven to escape from the hustle and bustle of the normal seating and shopping area.
2. And it feels luxurious rather than the utilitarian feel of many airport lounges.
3. The atmosphere is one of calm and quiet, yet with a friendly and welcoming tone.

There are separate areas for working and browsing the internet, dining, resting in comfortable armchairs with a fake fire to warm you and an excellent children’s area (big boys and girls allowed too!) to play on video games and to race on the full size Scalextric set.

1. One of the main selling points of the entrance fee is that the Manchester lounges include free food as well as drinks.
2. Forget bowls of crisps, nuts and chocolate bars, they offer you everything from bacon butties, porridge or a continental starter to your day, through to panini’s, sandwiches and snacks.

More importantly it is waiter service and Kate who served me with my hot sandwich and drinks was an absolute delight. If that is not enough, then you can order from a special menu a range of full meals such as a Chicken roast or a full cooked breakfast, nothing costing you more than £5.50.

• When you add up the value of free drink and food, newspapers and magazines as well as the chance to watch some TV or wait for your flight in calm and quiet it is well worth the pre-book entrance price which has been as low as £12 per person, or £25 when you pitch up.
• And they can be used by everyone, whether you are travelling for work or leisure, as a single, couple or family giving you a great start to your holiday or working day.

You can even buy it as a gift for friends or relatives or even honeymooners to get their trip off to a flying start. My only criticism? You can’t see any planes from this particular lounge which many people like to do, but this is more than made up by the service and ambience.

Oh, and one last thing – please build one in Terminal 3 as well so that all terminals are then covered. At Gatwick, No.1 Traveller offers a similar service. Waiters to deliver your food and drink, a great kiddie’s area and table football as well as an impressive living wall of plants. Now to British Airways.

I recently flew out and back to South America in business class, using up the points on my frequent flier card. This entitled me to use lounges at Manchester and Heathrow throughout my trip. You cannot buy your way into these lounges, something that I witnessed a number of people try to do, so there really is a demand for the service.

1. And at T5, unless your airline ticket or flier card allows you in, there is no choice but to sit it out in the main public areas.
2. Manchester’s BA lounge is functional, has excellent views over the airfield and provides snacks and drinks.
3. As you can only really fly to London now on BA from the North West, most people are not using the lounge for long, so it does the job well.

Heathrow is a different matter altogether. The lounges in Terminal 5, the home of BA are excellent. Spacious, too numerous to list them all or try them all out in one visit, they offer a range of complimentary food, from snacks and drinks through to breakfast, as well as light meals and fresh fruit.

A huge range of magazines and newspapers to read, TV areas, kids areas and places to leave your luggage as you go shopping in the terminal. You can even grab a shower in the Elemis spa or enjoy a treatment for tired and flagging travellers. Service is excellent, although the only waiter service is in the ultra posh and exclusive Concorde room, only accessible to First Class and Gold card members, so the likes of me are firmly kept out.

The lounges at Heathrow really made my trip, especially on the return where I had a four hour wait for my flight back to Manchester. So when you are travelling away next, why not treat yourself and make that journey that little more special and memorable for the right reasons.

Do they feed you on a 5 hour flight?

Will you get fed on flight? Maybe To buy or not to buy, that is the question that plagues some airline passengers who aren’t certain whether they are going to get fed on their flights. Nowadays, airlines show in-flight food options on their Web sites.

Sometimes the carriers will tell you when you make a reservation whether your flight includes food service. If they don’t tell you, ask. But when you’re told “snack,” don’t assume anything. For a recent 4-hour 32-minute United Airlines flight from Chicago to Vancouver, the gate agent announced that a snack would be served on the flight.

So I bought a turkey sandwich from a food stand near the gate. The snack, when it was served, consisted of chips, cheese, crackers, raisins and a tiny candy bar. On the return flight I also knew that a snack would be served so I purchased a sandwich from an airport food stand.

1. This time, however, the snack included a chicken and cheese sandwich on a doughy bun and other nibblies.
2. A colleague recently flew Coach on United from Chicago to Oakland, a 4-hour 34-minute flight that sold food from Au Bon Pain Bakery Cafe-$10 a pop for lunch options.
3. So here you had United flights almost identical in length, one with snacks, the other with food for sale.

What gives? Well, it depends upon the time you’re departing and whether food is sold on a particular route, explained a United spokeswoman. Onboard sales were being tested on the Oakland flight, but not on the Vancouver route. In the case of the Chicago-Vancouver flight, she said, passengers were served a free “light snack box”-brand name items that can be rotated every three to four months.

1. On the return, passengers were offered a “sandwich snack” because the flight went through two time zones and arrived at O’Hare after the dinner hour.
2. Food-for-sale service is available in select markets on flights of 3 1/2 to 5 hours westbound from Chicago and 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours eastbound.
3. Meals, she said, are determined by time, distance and departure times: 5 to 9:59 a.m.

for breakfast, 11 a.m. to 1:29 p.m. for lunch and 4 to 7:29 p.m. for dinner. A light snack is offered during non-primary meal hours. United’s meals for sale come from TGI Friday’s, Bennigan’s, Hard Rock Cafe, Eli’s Cheesecake and Au Bon Pain. Every domestic carrier, as you might expect, has its own formula for the care and feeding of its Coach passengers.

• If you’re flying First Class, you can count on being fed for free usually on flights exceeding 1 1/2 to 2 hours.) But when in doubt, you can always brown-bag-it.
• In any case, here’s what Coach passengers can expect from major carriers usually on a cash-only basis: – American Airlines.
• Only Coach passengers on flights four hours or longer get complimentary meals as well as those on flights between Dallas/Ft.

Worth and Boston and the New York City area. If you are on a Chicago-Dallas flight, for example, better BYO. American sells meals at the gate only at DFW and San Juan. – Continental Airlines. In the aftermath of 9/11, when airlines were really hurting, Continental chose to continue its in-flight meal services, but within time parameters: 7-9 for breakfast, 11-1 for lunch and 5-7 for dinner.

• On flights of 1 1/2 to 2 hours, a snack is offered for breakfast, beverage and munchies during lunch and dinner hours and at in-between times.
• On flights over 2 hours, there’s a cold breakfast snack and a cold sandwich snack for lunch and dinner.
• On flights over 3 1/2 hours, there’s a breakfast snack basket and a hot sandwich snack basket for lunch and dinner.

– Delta Air Lines. Meal service is determined by time of day, flying time and mileage, but in general, food is served on flights of approximately four hours or more than 1,750 miles. Meals and snacks are available for purchase on domestic flights longer than 3 1/2 hours or 1,550 miles.

Delta’s food selections, ranging in price from $2 to $10, come from Atlanta Bread Company and Gate Gourmet. – Northwest Airlines. Alternating caterers, Northwest’s meals for sale currently are prepared by Hard Rock Cafe and are available in the main cabin on flights to and from main hubs-Minneapolis/St.

Paul, Detroit and Memphis and on certain flights from Milwaukee-in all on 220 flights a day. Prices range from $2 to $10 and food options include breads, rolls, fresh fruit and juice for breakfast, and gourmet sandwiches, salads, fruit, cookies and bottled water for lunch and dinner.

– US Airways. Coach-class passengers get In-flight Cafe service on domestic flights over 700 miles (approximately 2 hours) consisting of meals from TGI Friday’s. There’s a $7 breakfast with a choice of a croissant with ham and cheese, fresh fruit and a yogurt topped with granola, or apple crumb cake, fresh fruit and yogurt.

The $10 lunch/dinner options are a tomato pesto chicken sandwich, Caesar salad and a cookies ‘n’ cream bar, or a southwestern cobb salad. In-flight snack boxes with items such as breakfast bars, crackers, chips, raisins and smaller sandwiches are available for $5.

Smaller, low-cost carriers have their own formulas for taking care of their passengers. It was America West that launched the trend for in-flight food sales in January of last year. The service has been so successful that the carrier will now offer its In-flight Cafe service on all flights longer than 3 hours starting this summer.

Its service, catered by LSG Sky Chefs, is geared to breakfast flights departing between 6 and 9 a.m.-egg and ham on a biscuit, yogurt and fresh fruit or a triple berry muffin, fresh fruit and yogurt for $7 or a breakfast snack box for $5. Lunch and dinner options include a smoked turkey and pepper sandwich or roast beef and fontina cheese on a roll plus other goodies for $7, or a more modest snack box for $5.

ATA recently expanded its in-flight food sales to include select flights not only from its Indianapolis hub, but between Chicago and Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Juan, San Francisco and Seattle. Breakfast, lunch and dinner cost $5 and range from such fare as a Danish, yogurt and fruit cup to turkey wraps for lunch and dinner.

Southwest Airlines, of course, still maintains its no-frills formula of free peanuts or pretzels on flights of 450 miles, but on trips between 450 and 1,120 miles passengers get a Nabisco brand cookie pack on morning flights or a salty cracker snack in the afternoon.

What meal is at 4 pm?

Types of meals, in the order served throughout the day –

• Breakfast – meal eaten in the morning, usually before 10:00 am. Later meals can involve breakfast food but are usually not considered breakfast.
• Second breakfast – small meal eaten after breakfast, but before lunch. It is traditional in Bavaria, in Poland, and in Hungary. In Bavaria or Poland, special dishes are made exclusively to be eaten during second breakfast. In Vienna and most other parts of Austria the second breakfast is referred to as Jause,
  • Tiffin – second breakfast or light lunch, most commonly in India, “Tiffin” can also refer to boxed or packaged lunches eaten outside the home, such as those that are delivered by dabbawalas in Mumbai to workers in the city.
• Brunch – combination of breakfast and lunch eaten usually during the late morning but it can extend to as late as 3 pm. The word is a portmanteau of breakfast and lunch, It is usually larger than a breakfast and usually replacing both breakfast and lunch; it is most common on Sundays. Brunch originated in England in the late 1800s, and in the 1930s became popular in the United States,
• Elevenses (also called “morning tea”) – light snack and drink taken in the late morning after breakfast and before lunch.
• Lunch – midday meal of varying size depending on the culture. The origin of the words lunch and luncheon relate to a small meal originally eaten at any time of the day or night, but during the 20th century gradually focused toward a small or mid-sized meal eaten at midday. Lunch is the second meal of the day after breakfast. Luncheon is now considered a formal lunch.
• Tea – any of several different meals or mealtimes, depending on a country’s customs and its history of drinking tea. However, in those countries where the term’s use is common, the influences are generally those of the former British Empire (now the Commonwealth of Nations ). Tea as a meal can be small or large.

Afternoon tea – mid-afternoon meal, typically taken at 4 pm, consisting of light fare such as small sandwiches, individual cakes and scones with tea,

High tea – British meal usually eaten in the early evening.

• Linner/Lupper/Dunch/Dinch –- Not in general use. Linner is a late lunch or almost dinner meal. The name comes in reference to brunch, being a combination of the words “lunch” and “dinner” or “Supper”. Dunch comes in reference to brunch, being a combination of “dinner and “lunch”.
• Dinner – most significant and important meal of the day, which can replace either lunch, high tea, or supper. However, the term “dinner” can have many different meanings depending on the culture; it may mean a meal of any size eaten at any time of day. Historically, in British culture, dinner was taken at midday for children and manual workers; in the early evening for office workers; and in the late evening by the wealthier elements of society. During the latter half of the 20th century there has been a cultural shift towards everyone having the main meal in the late evening. The meaning as the evening meal, now generally the largest of the day, is becoming standard in most parts of the English-speaking world.
• Supper – light meal eaten in the late evening; as early as 7pm or as late as midnight. Usually eaten when the main meal of the day is taken at lunchtime or high tea.

As domestic flights resumed on May 25 last year after the nationwide lockdown, the MoCA had allowed the airlines to serve in-flight meals under certain conditions.

The ministry said it decided to review the on-board meal services in domestic flights due to the “the increasing threat of Covid-19 and its variants,” news agency PTI reported. All three coronavirus variants of the UK, South Africa and Brazil demonstrated increased transmissibility, as reported by the World Health Organization, the ministry added.

1. Here’s everything you need to know about the new rules: *To curb the spread of Covid-19, no meals will be served aboard domestic flights with a flight duration lesser than two hours.
2. In case of a flight with duration of more than two hours, tray set-up, plates and cutlery will be completely disposable with no re-use, or cleaned and disinfected rotables will be used.

*Used disposable trays crockeries/cutleries shall not be re-used. Used rotables shall be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before re-use. *In all classes, tea, coffee,alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage services will be in disposable cans containers, bottles, or glasses.

• There will be no pouring service and beverages will be served in single-use disposable units.
• All used disposable and reusable meal trays, plates, cutleries, beverages bottles, cans and glasses will be disposed of in the trash bags and carts by the crew, at the end of the meal service.
• The crew shall wear a fresh set of gloves for every meal beverage service.
