Is Terminal 5 only for British Airways?

British Airways’ home at London Heathrow, Terminal 5, opened on March 27, 2008. Terminal 5 puts the customer in control of their travel, from the technology employed both before and during the flight experience to the flowing, flexible layout of the building.  Customers have voted British Airways staff as the best in Europe at the Skytrax 2019 World Airline Awards, and Best Airport Terminal in the world for five years running (2012-2016).

Customers can move swiftly through the departures area giving them the luxury to do as they like once they are ‘airside’, be that relaxing, eating, shopping or working, all within a state-of-the-art environment.

The overall customer experience:
Terminal 5 was created with the basic premise of making air travel easy through one of the world’s busiest airport hubs – London Heathrow.

Customers flow through the airport in a logical, linear manner. The majority of customers have checked in before arriving at the airport or they can use one of the British Airways has Touchpoints and hosted bag drop machines, with up to 96 check-in kiosks and 70 hosted bag drop machines in the departures hall (currently operating from a limited availability due to Covid-19).  These automated machines speed up the process of checking in a bag, while hosts are still on hand to ensure the airlines high standard of customer service.

The Flight Connections Centre for transfer customers is located within the heart of the building and helps many more customers connect through a single terminal meaning less distance to travel and a faster arrival at their next flight. First, Club World, Club Europe, Gold and Silver Executive Club and oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members can also take advantage of the five British Airways’ lounges that are available for them in Terminal 5, (based on eligibility and availability, please see the for more information).

Operations: By the end of 2017, almost 270 million customers had used Terminal 5, on more than 1.9 million flights.  In 2019, the terminal on average looked after between 550 and 600 weekday flights and around 90,000 customers a day.  In 2019, at the peak of the busy school summer holidays, more than 100,000 customers used the facilities each day.

In 2019, Terminal 5 served more than 115 destinations. The building: Terminal 5, which opened on March 27, 2008, was designed by Rogers, Stirk, Harbour & Partners. It was built at a cost of £4.3 billion. It is exclusively used by International Airlines Group members British Airways and Iberia and has the capacity to handle more than 30 million customers a year.

British Airways invested £330 million in designing and equipping its parts of the terminal. This figure included £60 million spent on the lounge complex as well as significant investment in IT systems, ground vehicles and equipment, storage and maintenance facilities plus staff training and familiarisation.

The building is so vast it is possible to fit 50 football pitches over Terminal 5’s five floors, but moving around couldn’t be simpler thanks to improved flow through the building, clear signage and the location of departure gates.
Terminal 5 consists of a main terminal building (T5A) and two satellite buildings (T5B and T5C) linked by an underground track transit system.

T5A and T5B opened in March 2008, while T5C opened in May 2010. Terminal 5 has embraced new technologies, with the additions of touch-points, new hosted bag drop machines, self-boarding gates, automated security machines in flight connections areas and e-gates in the immigration hall.

The building itself is light, airy and modern – more than 30,000 square metres of glass was used to glaze the 40m high and the 396m long main terminal building.
The aircraft stands are located around the buildings.
Due to the use of an underground track transit system this means that aircraft are unimpaired by cul-de-sacs or other planes when they need to pull away from the jetty.

This will speed up the arrival and departure of flights, thereby improving punctuality.  Arriving ready: The majority of customers use BA’s self-service channels to check-in – many of them arrive at Terminal 5 ready to fly having checked-in via ba.com The building is designed to ensure that customers keep moving in one direction, starting at one of the check-in kiosks before moving on to the fast bag drop desks followed by the northern and southern security search points.

The intelligent, flexible design of the building also means that British Airways can use the desks to react to changing customer needs and ensure the continuing forward flow of passengers.  All domestic flights leaving from T5 are now boarded through self-serve biometric gates.
The gates create a smoother journey for customers as they travel through the airport, with travellers scanning their own boarding pass when they arrive at the gate and then simply walking through to the aircraft.

All short haul flights departing from T5A are pushed back using remote controlled, eco-friendly Mototok tugs. The equipment, used to move Airbus short-haul aircraft, replaces traditional diesel tugs, allowing a single ramp agent to push an aircraft backwards from the gate remotely.

Getting there: Customers are encouraged, where possible, to take public transport to Terminal 5.  A plaza hosts the main transport links.
It is a unique design feature and space (30m wide and the length of the building) and is landscaped with 40 mature trees, fountains, seating areas, artworks and an outdoor café area when the weather permits.

Underneath the north end of the plaza a railway station houses six platforms; two for the Heathrow Express, two for London Underground’s Piccadilly Line and two which are built and safeguarded in advance of a scheme to link Heathrow by rail to the West.

Natural light floods the platforms thanks to a transparent roof made from the same material as the Eden Project biomes in Cornwall.  For those who do need to arrive by car, a new spur road has been built directly from the M25.
This makes access to the terminal much easier and avoids the need for cars to circumnavigate the perimeter roads, which could cause more congestion and pollution.

The plaza separates the multi-storey car park and drop off forecourts from the main terminal. They are connected to the departures hall of the terminal building by four glazed ‘sky bridges’.  The car park has some 4,000 spaces and Heathrow has invested in a range of technologies to make it stress free, including a car finder service to help customers locate their car and bay monitoring to ensure they find a space quickly.

The bus and coach station is located on the ground floor level of the multi-storey car park.  A 600-room luxury hotel, The Sofitel London Heathrow, is also part of the T5 campus. The £180 million hotel opened in July 2008 and has a short covered link bridge joining it direct to the main terminal building.

Getting around: Terminal 5 has been designed in such a way as to ensure that it is simple for customers to make their way through the building.  On arrival at Terminal 5, customers will move immediately to the bank of kiosks, then onto the fast bag drop desks, before making their way through security.

Customers will then pass through the retail area towards the aircraft gates.
Heathrow has fitted large ‘beacons’ as orientation landmarks, making it clear for customers where they need to be.  There are plenty of screens and information around Terminal 5 denoting the location of and amount of time it takes to get to each gate.

British Airways staff are also on hand to help with queries. Transfers:  All British Airways transfers will take place through Terminal 5. Unlike the rest of the yellow signage normally associated with airports, the transfer channels will be highlighted with purple signs making it easy for customers to connect from one flight to another.  An underground track transit system has been installed throughout Terminal 5 to transfer customers between the buildings.

The system will move 6,500 passengers per hour at a speed of 30 miles per hour. The journey time is just 45 seconds to T5B and just under 90 seconds to T5C. Premium customers connecting from one flight onto another, are offered the connection service via an environmentally-friendly electric taxi service.  The taxis features Wi-Fi, phone, laptop and USB charging and a panorama roof- great for plane spotting.  The introduction of the fleet of electric taxis are part of Terminal 5’s bigger plan to become emission free airside.   In 2017, the First Wing opened at T5 – an exclusive redesigned check-in area for premium customers, including a dedicated private security channel with direct lounge access for the first time.

Terminal 5 has allowed British Airways to radically overhaul the airline’s airport lounges, with the lounges costing £60 million to build. There are six lounges within the Heathrow terminals collectively known as ‘Galleries’, with five location in Terminal 5 and one in Terminal 3.

As of current, Our Galleries South Club and Galleries First lounges at Heathrow, Terminal 5 are open. We have introduced a number of measures to ensure the health, well-being and safety of you and our colleagues, including safe distance markers and sanitising stations throughout the lounge. We’ve worked with our suppliers to provide a clean and safe environment for customers and our colleagues from the preparation and delivery of food to cleaning the bathrooms, communal and seat areas.

To minimise contact, we’ve launched a new online site ‘Your Menu’ where you’ll be able to order your own food and drink and which (once it’s been submitted) will be brought directly to you. We have also introduced contactless lounge entry screens at the entrance of our Galleries Club South lounge where you’ll be able to scan your own boarding pass.

Crafted screens divide the lounges into sections. Beautiful wine bars are available for customers and restaurants will serve fresh food prepared in view of the traveller.  Work and entertainment zones allow customers to log into the internet, check their emails and view entertainment. The Concorde Room boasts a Concorde bar and restaurant.

The Galleries First Lounge hosts a champagne bar and a ‘Gold’ bar and the Galleries Club Lounges feature ‘Silver’ bars. The bars will host regular wine tastings for the connoisseurs travelling.  The Elemis Travel Spa is temporarily closed until further notice due to Covid-19.

Prior to Covid-19, for those wanting to relax and indulge themselves, they include customised facials, shoulder, scalp and back massages, and feet and hand re-energisers.  Baggage: Once the customer has checked in at the kiosks or online, they can deposit their luggage at up to 70 hosted bag drop desks.

The bags are loaded into lifts and lowered down into the highly sophisticated baggage system that delivers them to their specific flight. The baggage system was the first part of the building to be developed ensuring that it is comfortably housed within Terminal 5.

It is one of the most advanced of any major global airport and involves more than 18km of belts and tracks to move the bags around the terminal.
At its peak it processes 12,000 bags per hour.

Retail: Customers wishing to catch up on any retail therapy or fine dining can do so at Terminal 5.
The retail facilities are unlike anything experienced before at an airport terminal.  Designed into the fabric of the building, the 200,000sq ft retail area has been carefully designed to ensure it is proportionate to the scale of Terminal 5, enhances the experience and works with the grain of the building.

Terminal 5 holds the capacity of more than 112 stores and restaurants across Terminal 5’s three buildings offering a great choice of goods and food. For more information on available stores and restaurants in Terminal 5 please Environment: Close attention was paid to minimising the impact on the environment during the construction of Terminal 5.85 per cent of waste on the project was recovered and materials have been recycled and re-used throughout the building process.  A super-strength concrete was used for the construction of the airfield, which meant less was required.

This alone saved 60,000 tonnes of CO2.
Waste heat from an existing combined heat and power plant is being piped to the Terminal 5 energy centre to provide the building with 85 per cent of its heat on demand.
This saves around 11,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.  Inside the terminal, the lighting is controlled digitally.

Individual lights can be turned on, off or dimmed. The baggage systems and escalators benefit from variable speed drives, slowing down the systems when not in use.  The terminal itself is glazed on all facades, reducing the need for artificial lighting.

South-facing facades benefit from louvres, angled in such a way as to prevent the summer sun penetrating the building. Energy efficient fittings are found throughout the terminal building and only centrally chilled water is used to cool the building, limiting the need for individually chilled air conditioning units and refrigerators throughout the building.  Water from Terminal 5’s rainwater harvesting and groundwater boreholes is being used reducing the demand on the public water supply by 70 per cent.

The harvesting scheme re-uses up to 85 per cent of the rainfall that falls on the terminal’s campus. When aircraft arrive on to a stand they can be attached to a system which pumps air into the cabin. When used with fixed electrical ground power units the aircraft engines and auxiliary power units can be completely shut down cutting out unnecessary emissions.

What airlines fly out of Terminal 5 at Heathrow?

Airlines flying from Heathrow Terminal 5 – Terminal 5 is normally exclusively used by just two airlines; BA and Iberia. British Airways, with the majority of their flights departing from Terminal 5, fly long haul, Iberia fly to Madrid whilst Iberia Express serve Gran Canaria and Tenerife North. If your baggage gets lost during your flight, you should make sure you inform your airline straight away. You can inform British Airways at the arrivals desk in the baggage reclaim area. You will then be asked to complete a report and provide them with your telephone number and a reference number to assist them in finding your bag.

Level 3 Check-in: In Zone B Level 3 Departures: Near Hamleys, Near WHSmith, and with Travelex. Level 2 Departures: With Moneycorp near the entrance for gates A1-A7 and with Travelex near Prada. Terminal 5C: Departures Next to British Airways Customer Services. Ground Floor Arrivals (Passenger area): Near Carousel 1, and near Carousel 9. Ground Floor Arrivals (Public area): Near WHSmiths, and opposite Caffé Nero.

A number of Bureaux de Change offices are located throughout the terminal belonging to Travelex, Travelex provide over 80 currencies alongside travel insurance and their new Money Card, especially for those overseas purchases. With 14 offices throughout both Terminal 5 and 5b, you won’t far away from an exchange desk! The offices are open from 5.00 until 22.00 for you to exchange on the day, or to pick up pre-ordered currency. Emergency phones are located throughout Terminal 5. If there is a medical emergency, use one of these phones to call 222, and the operator will arrange to send an ambulance or medical help to your location immediately. Highstreet favourites Boots are located throughout Terminal 5, both before and after passport control.

Wi-Fi is accessible throughout Terminal 5 and is free for the duration of your stay at Heathrow.
If you are a Heathrow Rewards member, you get access to wi-fi that is up to 5 x faster than the standard option! Payphones are located throughout Terminal 5, and you can use either cash or cards with these.

There are also phones for wheelchair users, and text phones for the hard of hearing. There are no fax services available in Heathrow Terminal 5, but you may be able to find one in a British Airways lounge. There is no post office at Heathrow Terminal 5 but the nearest one is at Terminal 3 in the departures building before security, and it is open every day.

You’ll find a few post boxes before and after security should you need to send anything from the airport.
Be aware that post may be inspected by HM Customs, and you are unable to send parcels.
If you need to charge your mobile phone, laptop or tablet, there are Free Power Poles located before and after passport control.

You can plug your devices into these using either a plug or a USB charger.

Is BA moving to Terminal 3?

Who uses Terminal 2 at Heathrow?

Star Alliance – Terminal 2 is the base for Star Alliance members that fly from Heathrow. All airlines transferred from other terminals by January 2017, with Air India shifting from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2 on 25 January 2017. There is no common Star Alliance lounge in the terminal; Lufthansa has a lounge in the main terminal, while Air Canada, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines each have lounges in the satellite.

Is shuttle bus at Heathrow free?

We are hoping these changes will be short-lived and once Heathrow’s financial health has been restored, we plan to introduce an improved programme of subsidised and sustainable travel for our colleagues, communities and passengers”. Previous policy in place before Covid and kept as reference for when the temporary measures end Heathrow Airport subsidises all public buses, most of which are the famous red London buses so that any journey from the Heathrow Airport terminals to anywhere on the perimeter roads is completely free.

In many cases these public buses stop right outside the entrance of many Heathrow hotels.
Buses are free as long as you get off/on the buses on the perimeter roads of the airport and travel to and from the passenger terminals.
Go beyond the perimeter roads and you pay the normal bus fare.

Many of the buses run a 24/7 schedule and all run from early morning until late evening.

The official Heathrow Hoppa buses do not run 24×7 and are less frequent than most of the public bus routes. Most of the buses are the famous London red buses like the one pictured above right. A few going south and west from the airport are run by different operators but still offer the free journeys around the airport perimeter.

Can you walk from Heathrow Terminal 3 to 4?

There is no walkway T3 to T4 as they are on other sides of the airport. With the coming of T5, the Heathrow Express now only goes to Heathrow Central (covering terminals 1, 2 and 3) and T5. To get to T4 from T3 you have to get the Heathrow Connect from Heathrow Central as Alanrow suggested.

Which airlines use Heathrow Terminal 4?

SkyTeam – As of 1 November 2022, only 7 SkyTeam members use this terminal: China Eastern Airlines, ITA Airways, Kenya Airways, Korean Air, Saudia, TAROM and Vietnam Airlines, China Eastern Airlines has transferred to this terminal on 1 November 2022 from Terminal 2 and all other SkyTeam members have transferred to this terminal in June or July 2022 from either Terminal 2 or 3.

However, 6 SkyTeam members currently do not use this terminal: Aeroméxico, Air France, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, KLM and Middle East Airlines, Delta Air Lines vacated to Terminal 3 on 14 September 2016 to ease connections with partner Virgin Atlantic, Aeroméxico, Air France and KLM previously used this terminal before the pandemic but Aeroméxico has not transferred its flights from Terminal 3 to this terminal after it resumed in 2022 while Air France and KLM moved to Terminal 3 on 24 August 2021 to launch joint ventures with Delta and Virgin Atlantic.

China Airlines has not transferred its flights from Terminal 2 to this terminal when it moved to Heathrow from Gatwick. Middle East Airlines has not transferred its flights from Terminal 3 to this terminal when it joined SkyTeam. Virgin Atlantic will join SkyTeam in 2023.

Why is there no Terminal 4 at Heathrow?

Terminal 4 (T4) at Heathrow Airport is opening today (Tuesday 14 June) for the first time in two years. It was forced to close due to the pandemic, when passenger numbers plummeted and countries around the world enforced travel restrictions. Now with passenger numbers rising and travel rules relaxing, the reopening of T4 will create more space and capacity to deal with the ‘summer peak’ across all four terminals.

Heathrow says it has been working behind the scenes throughout the last two years to modernise the terminal, including a refurbishment of toilets, air conditioning and hold baggage screening machines.

Some 5.3 million people travelled through the west London airport in May.
Although that was around a fifth lower than the total for the same month in 2019, it represents nearly an eight-fold increase on May last year when the UK’s Covid-19 travel restrictions were in place.

Heathrow is one of several UK airports which have seen long queues in recent weeks as the aviation sector struggles to cope with the spike in demand for travel amid a staffing shortage. Chief executive John Holland-Kaye said: “I’m immensely proud of the way my team has worked with airlines and other partners to ensure passengers got away during the Jubilee half-term.

“We continue to make good progress with our plans to ramp up capacity and are working closely with airlines and Government to keep supply and demand in balance as we grow, so that passengers can travel through Heathrow this summer with confidence.” The airport claimed “recent criticism of service levels across the sector” highlight that its proposal to increase airlines’ fees for using the airport up to 2027 is “the right one for consumers”.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is expected to set a new cap on the airport’s charges this summer. Mr Holland-Kaye said: “We now need a regulatory settlement from the CAA that protects service and resilience levels, incentivises investment and maintains affordable private financing.
