The Airbus A321 is a member of the Airbus A320 family of short to medium range, narrow-body, commercial passenger twin engine jet airliners ; it carries 185 to 236 passengers. It has a stretched fuselage which was the first derivative of the baseline A320 and entered service in 1994, about six years after the original A320.

Is A321 bigger than 737?

Comparison – At 206000 lbs, the Airbus A321-200 is heavier than the Boeing 737-800, but it compensates for this with the more powerful engines rated for 33000 lbf, against 27300 lbf each on the Boeing offer. Both aircraft have similar nominal cruise speeds hovering around Mach 0.78, but the Airbus A321ceo can carry 185 passengers in a standard arrangement, compared to 162 for the 737.

The Boeing 737-800 exceeds the Airbus A321-200 range by 230 nautical miles, for a total of 2930 nmi. While Boeing leans on traditional flight controls with minor augmentations, Airbus built the A321 around a digital fly-by-wire system, like most new aircraft introduced in the late 1980s. The practical result is that the jet prevents the pilots from exceeding the flight envelope.

There is no consensus about which method is better. Some pilots prefer the safety that Airbus provides, while others do not feel comfortable letting go of the full authority in Boeing. The added passenger capacity on the Airbus A321-200 is both a blessing and a curse, as while it allows airlines to move more passengers in one go, it also makes less popular routes cost-prohibitive on the aircraft.

  • While the A321ceo was a welcome addition to the A320 family, the commonality and familiar aspect of the 737NG made it hard to compete in earnest.

The Airbus A321neo and the Boeing 737 MAX 8 entered service around 2017. Both aircraft boasted a similar range with a marginal advantage over the A321neo, but Airbus retained its better passenger capacity. The tried and tested fly-by-wire on the Airbus was a smooth transition for pilots from previous A320 family models.

Boeing attempted to repeat this with the MCAS to keep flight characteristics close to the 737NG, but this decision led to two deadly crashes that seriously damaged the new 737 families. Even after surviving the trouble caused by the MCAS, Boeing could not keep up with Airbus. The European company introduced the Airbus A321LR, which extended the A321neo range to 3996 nmi.

In response, Boeing brought in the 737 MAX 9. This aircraft increased the passenger capacity to 193 in a two-class configuration. The number still fell short of the 206 of the A321neo and A321LR. The final nail in the coffin came with the Airbus A321XLR.

Does an Airbus A321 have First Class?

I originally published this review in January of 2019. With the exception of the current restrictions on service due to the Coronavirus most of what I wrote then holds true today (May 2021). Now it is Aug 2020 and I have included an update on the bottom of the page with changes from the original review. For this review I will concentrate on the typical First Class products in the US.

  • American also uses the A321 on their JFK to SFO & LAX routes.
  • These aircraft have three classes of service (4 with MCE) with International Business and First Class seats.
  • This aircraft is noted as “32B-Airbus A321 (Sharklets)”.
  • The three versions in this review are used on all other domestic routes as well as to/from Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

There is a big difference between the interiors and seats. American placed a large order with Airbus before their merger with US Airways. These aircraft, like the 3-class variant used to noted as “32B-Airbus A321 (Sharklets)” while the A321’s American inherited from US Airways are noted as “321-Airbus A321”.

  1. However, AA has changed this and now the A321neo’s are designated as 32Q while the other two A321’s are just 321 (but for this review I will still refer to it as 32B to distinguish the two aircraft).
  2. The only way to know which aircraft you will most likely get is by looking at the seat map.
  3. This is important because the older USAir A321’s do not have Main Cabin Extra (MCE).

Only the bulkhead and exit rows in Economy are designated as MCE. Whereas the “newer” A321’s and the neo have MCE in rows 8 through 10 (as well as a few other rows). This also holds true with their A319’s. There are two versions, one American ordered and the others they also inherited from USAir.

  • Only this time, they are all noted as “319-Airbus A319”.
  • I have flown several routes on these aircraft and a good percentage will follow the two different airlines hubs.
  • So you will find the USAir version (321) on flights to and from PHX, PHL, and CLT while the 32B on flights to and from DFW, ORD, and MIA.

They also fly the 32B (2-class) and Neo from LAX & PHX to their Hawaiian destinations (HNL, LIH, OGG, and KOA). The 32Q has five rows (20 seats) in First Class while the other two versions only have 16 seats in First in a 2×2 layout (A319 has 8 seats) which means it is much harder getting upgraded on the A321’s (and A319’s) than the B737’s.

Boeing 757 can carry around 200-240 passengers to a range of 3,915 nmi (7,250 km). Airbus A321XLR can carry 206 passengers to a range of 5,000 nmi (9,300 km).

Right away we can see that the Boeing 757 variants can carry more passengers than the A321XLR, but is beaten by the latter’s range. If American Airlines is planning to replace the Boeing 757, it is unlikely that they are selecting the XLR for its longer range.

which begs the question: if it comes down to passengers, is the Airbus A321XLR even a good replacement for the Boeing 757? The Airbus A321XLR will bring plenty of improvements over the 757 in terms of fuel efficiency, passenger comforts (such as LED lighting and better pressurization), larger overhead bins and modern aircraft controls.

It would be a bit unfair to compare an aircraft that has been flying for 30 years to another that is yet to be built, but the Airbus A321XLR is excellent on paper.
