Seat Leon SC Cupra 280 – Seat is yet another European manufacturer that does not sell its products in the United States. But unlike Citroen, Seat was never launched in the U.S., although a North American expansion has been rumored in the past. As most Seat automobiles are rebadged Volkswagens or borrow most of their underpinnings from the German group, not having them around here is far from being a major loss.
- However, the Leon SC Cupra 280 is a different story, at least until the range-topping Volkswagen Golf R goes on sale.
- With 280 horsepower on tap, the Cupra 280 is not far behind the Golf R’s 296 ponies and it has the looks on its side.
- Just have a look at that nicely sculpted body and then have a peek at the Golf R’s plain coachwork.
Pretty neat, huh? It’s not only the second-fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle on the Nurburgring, making it suitable for fun-filled track weekends, it also comes with a Performance Pack in certain parts of the world, which means even more performance, more grip and faster lap times.
Where are SEAT cars sold?
SEAT today also sells its cars in 11 countries in Asia, mostly in the Middle East and the Arabian peninsula, in 16 countries in Americas including North America, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, and finally Africa, mainly in North Africa.
Does Cupra sell in USA?
Cupra is one of the most interesting Volkswagen Group brands that we don’t get in the United States, but that could be changing soon, Drive reported this week. Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths confirmed in Australia they hope to use their expansion into the Australian market as a springboard into new ones—starting with the United States.
“There are markets outside of Australia that we’re developing,” Griffiths told Drive, “We’re strong in South America, particularly in Mexico but also in Colombia and Chile.” “On top of that, obviously if you want to become a global brand—our reason for coming to Australia—is to prove that we can become a global brand,” Griffiths said.
“Then obviously you need to look at markets like North America, but that would only be in a second phase.” While there is some confusion on geography going on in Griffiths’ comments—Mexico is in North America, my dude—what’s clear is the company has aspirations for the U.S.
No decision has been made yet on entering any additional North American markets, but Griffiths told Drive that the company is already starting to analyze the market. One market Cupra has no plans to expand to is China, despite that being the largest new-car market in the world. According to Griffiths, the Volkswagen Group already has a strong lineup there without needing Cupra to join in.
“The Volkswagen Group has quite a dominant share among its existing brands,” Griffiths told Drive, “They have a very strong position with Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda. So to go to China? Not at the moment. We have more priority for the U.S.” Cupra started as a performance badge for the Spanish Volkswagen Group subsidiary Seat, but it was spun off into its own brand, which now makes sporty cars with cool, unique copper-hued accents.
Can I buy a Cupra Formentor in USA?
Not long ago, the Seat Leon Cupra was the front-wheel-drive performance car to beat around Germany’s treacherous Nürburgring Nordschleife. Whether as a hatchback or wagon, the Spanish-built Leon Cupra could lap the famed track in just under eight minutes.
- Nothing moves slowly on the ‘Ring, however, and it didn’t take long for the likes of the Honda Civic Type R, Renault Megane RS, and Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport to knock the Leon Cupra off its front-drive pedestal at the track.
- No matter, riding its Nürburgring record’s publicity wave, Seat broke out the Cupra name for a standalone performance brand in 2018—and the Formentor SUV is its first creation.
Okay, so technically the Cupra brand launched last year with a sportier creation of the Seat Ateca SUV, and just last week, Cupra revealed new warmed-over versions of the existing Leon hatchback and wagon. But the Formentor is the first product designed from the ground up by Cupra.
Named after a cape on the Spanish island of Mallorca, and not, as you might have thought, some kind of demonic spirit, the Formentor is about the same size as a Subaru Crosstrek (175.2 inches long and 72.4 inches wide) but decidedly more potent. Its top powertrain offering is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
(The Subaru, meanwhile, is reportedly upgrading to —get this—a 170-hp engine. Oh boy!) In the Formentor, that mighty four is paired with all-wheel drive. Cupra also will offer the Formentor with plug-in hybrid motivation, employing a 148-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter four and a 114-hp electric motor to make a combined 241 hp and 295 lb-ft.
A 13-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack provides an all-electric driving range of roughly 31 miles (based on the European test cycle). The Cupra Formentor will also offer level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability. Design-wise, the Formentor’s copper accents and angular LED light signature is in line with the Cupra brand’s established aesthetic and similar to that of the Ateca and Leon.
The crossover is particularly attractive from the profile view thanks to steeply raked glass on the liftgate and a daylight opening that kicks up sharply at the C-pillar. The first Cupra Formentor SUVs will be delivered in the last quarter of 2020. Sadly, you won’t be able to buy one in the U.S., but the innovations coming to the Formentor could trickle down to other Volkswagen Group products that do come here, none of which are likely to have a name as badass as the Cupra’s, however.
Is Skoda coming to USA?
In The End, Skoda Will Not Be Coming Over The Atlantic With no dealer network, no reputation and a model lineup that would need tweaking to legally and culturally work in the US – plus VWs own presence there already – there is no real pull for Skoda there; the same could be said of Seat.

Could seat finally start selling cars in America?

However, it appears that Seat could finally start selling cars in America – albeit under a different name. Seat is planning to rebrand itself as a premium automaker in an effort to boost sales and profits. It’s part of a wider strategy by Seat’s parent company Volkswagen. As part of Seat’s rebranding, the automaker wants to tackle new global markets by the middle of the next decade – and North America is one of its new target markets.
They may not be branded as Seat models, however, as Autocar reports the automaker could be renamed to Cupra, which was recently launched as a performance sub-brand. Cupra Cupra Speaking to Autocar, Volkswagen chairman Herbert Diess wants Cupra to be positioned above Volkswagen as a “more emotional premium brand” akin to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Alfa Romeo.
