Is Sportage a crossover or SUV?

Is the Kia Sportage a crossover or an SUV? I recently purchased a Kia Sportage and I felt like they used the terms interchangeably, even at the dealership. Is there even a difference? The Kia Sportage was considered a compact SUV until 2004, but since then has been considered a compact crossover SUV.

Even within the auto industry, the terms “crossover” and “SUV” are used interchangeably without a clear distinction between the two. SUVs and crossovers have similar body styles, engines, and overall aesthetics. However, SUVs are built on truck chassis with body-on-frame design. Crossovers, on the other hand, are built on a car chassis with unibody design.

SUVs tend to be a bit roomier and rugged, offering lots of space, off-road capabilities, and towing capacity. Crossovers focus more on fuel economy and maneuverability. Now that you know that your Kia Sportage is a compact crossover SUV, let’s talk about how to lower your,

Is Sportage bigger than CRV?

Jack R. Nerad | Nov 07, 2022 Though it seems as if the Honda CR-V compact crossover SUV has been on the market for a little bit longer than forever, the Kia Sportage predates it. With the underpinnings of the Mazda Bongo, Korean automaker Kia introduced the Sportage in 1993.

The Honda CR-V came along two years later, in 1995. Now, both models battle tooth and nail in the largest vehicle category in the United States market—compact SUVs. And coincidentally, both models got complete makeovers for the 2023 model year. The similarities between the two models are not coincidental.

Both are 5-passenger crossovers that emphasize utility. Both offer hybrid versions. And the Sportage offers a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version as well. The two models share the same basic profile and are about the same length, width, and height. Some industry observers criticized the previous-generation Kia Sportage for being undersized for the segment.

  1. Ia designers and engineers made sure they didn’t make the same mistake this time around.
  2. The Kia Sportage is the brand’s best-selling model in the United States.
  3. The 2023 Sportage marks the beginning of its fifth generation, and it rides on a platform that also supports the larger Sorento crossover SUV.

In an effort to rid the Sportage of its “kind of small” reputation, Kia engineers have put together a vehicle that matches up well with the Honda CR-V. The 2023 Sportage is 7 inches and an inch taller than the 2022 model. Kia lengthened its wheelbase by 3.1 inches to 108.5 inches, which not only aids interior space but also enhances ride quality.

The 2023 Sportage’s powertrain also received a significant upgrade. The base engine is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that delivers six more horsepower than the previous-generation Sportage’s 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. But the more significant news is the addition of both hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Sportage and Sportage Hybrid are available with front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive ( AWD ).

One of the original crossovers, the Honda CR-V has been one of the best-selling Honda models for decades. The 2023 model-year CR-V is the first of its sixth generation. It, like the 2023 Sportage, is bigger than the previous-generation model, but the size increase isn’t as dramatic.

  1. Honda stretched the 2023 CR-V’s wheelbase 1.6 inches—to 106.3 inches—and widened the CR-V’s track front and rear.
  2. Honda bases the CR-V on its enhanced global architecture supporting the Honda Civic and the revised 2023 HR-V,
  3. Honda says the body is 15-percent torsionally stiffer than the previous-generation CR-V,

Combined with the revised suspension, the added rigidity gives the CR-V better handling while maintaining a comfortable ride. Like the Sportage, the 2023 CR-V is available in FWD and AWD configurations. Power comes from either a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or a hybrid drivetrain.

Is Kia Sportage smaller than CRV?

The Honda CR-V has better non-hybrid fuel economy and class-leading cargo space, but the Kia Sportage is the value choice because of its lower starting price and longer warranty. Conclusion.

Is a Kia Sportage a large SUV?

Cons –

Mediocre standard engineOverall economy could be betterFrustrating dual-purpose controls

Stop! Put away those outdated preconceptions about the 2023 Kia Sportage, because most of them are wrong. Kia has transformed the Sportage, and we’re not just talking about its futuristic styling. From bumper to bumper, the new Sportage boasts a wealth of changes to attract buyers who don’t want another Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4,

  • Yes, there are a couple missteps, but on balance the 2023 Sportage is a very good compact SUV and a worthy 2023 SUV of the Year finalist.
  • Ia offers three powertrains for the new Sportage, and we’ll be blunt: The base engine, which will power most Sportages—a 187-hp 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I-4 mated to an eight-speed automatic—is far and away the weakest of the bunch.

At the track, a 2.5-liter-powered Sportage X-Pro we tested finished the sprint to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds, at the back of a competitive pack. It’s possible another trim without the X-Pro’s off-road focus might be a couple tenths quicker, but regardless, the engine was criticized early and often by the SUV of the Year judges—especially those coming out of the peppier 2023 Honda CR-V.

  1. The Sportage Hybrid erased much of the bad taste of the base engine’s below-average performance and fuel economy.
  2. It drove nearly as well as the new CR-V Hybrid and otherwise held its own against the longtime MotorTrend favorite Honda.
  3. If that sounds like we’re damning with faint praise, zoom out and you’ll start to see the bigger picture.

The Sportage is one of the most spacious compact SUVs on the market, one in which a 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard on almost every trim. Even a digital instrument cluster is standard equipment, and although its functionality is limited, it’s still cool.

Innovative ideas abound throughout the Sportage’s cabin. The cupholders have two retractable claws that can hold cups when you need them to and larger items when you don’t. USB outlets are placed halfway up the backs of the front seats, making them far easier to use than those placed just above the floor like in so many other SUVs.

Then there are the rear-seat fold-down controls in the cargo area. Those latches make it slightly easier to use the Sportage’s sizable cargo area when you have large items to haul. It’s a detail Honda no longer offers. The hybrid model is the 2023 Sportage’s sweet spot.

Its EPA mpg rating in AWD form isn’t quite the match of the best in the segment, but it’s close enough, and we can forgive that fault because it’s a compelling crossover otherwise. The Sportage Hybrid cuts a full two seconds off the base engine model’s 0-60 sprint while markedly boosting fuel economy and reducing cabin noise in the process.

“Decent efficiency; a comfortable, well-equipped interior; and an engaging drive make for a package that’s easy to recommend the next time someone asks me what to shop for,” senior editor Justin Westbrook said, “not to mention the available warranty on offer.” There are some downsides besides the aforementioned base engine, including the plug-in hybrid model’s weak 34-mile all-electric range and frustrating on-screen buttons that control both HVAC and infotainment functions, depending on what’s displayed.

Is Tucson better than Sportage?

On the Road – On the open road, both Korean compact SUVs continue to deliver fairly underwhelming performance. The Hyundai Tucson is the more carlike of the two. Its driving position feels ever-so-slightly lower than the Kia’s, and its steering feels heavier so it initially seems more direct than it really is.

  • The Hyundai’s ride is firmer, sending reverberations from each and every impact right up into the driver’s seat.
  • The Kia Sportage, on the other hand, feels more like a traditional SUV from inside.
  • The low road traction of its off-road rubber gives the Kia’s steering a somewhat charmingly loose, light feel, while the extra squish from its tires helps smooth out the Sportage’s ride compared to the Hyundai’s.

Unfortunately, neither compact SUV has much going on under the hood. The buzzy 2.5-liter engines are loud, thrashy, and agricultural. Both manufacturers try to mask the lack of power with aggressive throttle tip-in tuning for accelerating away from a stop, but the Sportage and Tucson struggle when passing slower traffic on a highway or uphill—a trait bound to get worse when loaded up for a weekend drive with the whole family.

  1. The Kia, though, makes up some ground with its transmission tuning.
  2. Its eight-speed automatic’s shifts aren’t exactly timely, but the Sportage’s transmission changes gear quicker than the Hyundai’s does.
  3. It isn’t afraid to hold lower gears for longer, either, keeping the Sportage’s engine in the meat of its powerband.

The Hyundai Tucson, on the other hand, has a tendency to race to the highest possible gear as quickly as possible, and it’s reluctant to downshift until the driver really digs into the throttle. That makes the Tucson much more difficult to drive smoothly than the Sportage.

Which is better Hyundai or Kia?

Price and Value – In general, you will find that Kia vehicles are less expensive than their Hyundai counterparts. For example, the Kia Forte starts at $17,890, while the similar Hyundai Elantra starts at $19,850. Even though the Forte is less expensive, that doesn’t mean that Kia skimps on features – or quality.

Like Hyundai, Kia offers a 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty that’s among the best in the business. Both brands stand behind their products and offer quality that’s matched by few in the business. For 2021, Kia ranked third in the J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study*, ahead of brands like Toyota, Chevrolet, and even Mercedes-Benz.

Kia even finished ahead of both Hyundai and their Genesis luxury subsidiary. Kia was ranked highest among mass market brands, matched in quality only by Porsche and Lexus. We’d say that Kia is in good company at the top of that list. It’s also worth noting that the Kia Optima, Sorento and Sportage were singled out as being the best vehicles in their respective classes by J.D. Yes, there are a couple missteps, but on balance the 2023 Sportage is a very good compact SUV and a worthy 2023 SUV of the Year finalist. Kia offers three powertrains for the new Sportage, and we’ll be blunt: The base engine, which will power most Sportages—a 187-hp 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I-4 mated to an eight-speed automatic—is far and away the weakest of the bunch.

  • Its EPA mpg rating in AWD form isn’t quite the match of the best in the segment, but it’s close enough, and we can forgive that fault because it’s a compelling crossover otherwise.
  • The Sportage Hybrid cuts a full two seconds off the base engine model’s 0-60 sprint while markedly boosting fuel economy and reducing cabin noise in the process.
