The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV sold by Ford since 2000 over four generations. The first generation was jointly developed with Mazda which also created the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner as the twin model. Second generations of the Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, and Mazda Tribute were released in 2007 for the 2008 model year, but mostly restricted to North America.

  1. In other markets, the first generation models were either replaced by updated first generation versions, or replaced by the Mazda CX-7 (2006) and Ford Kuga (2008).
  2. Unlike the collaborative approach taken with the previous model, this time the design and engineering was carried out solely by Ford.
  3. Since 2013, the model has been paralleled with the Kuga sold outside North America, making them essentially identical.

A hybrid option was again available. Ford released the third generation model in 2012 for the 2013 model year. For the third-generation, Ford unified the model with the Europe-designed Ford Kuga as per the “One Ford” plan of having only one vehicle per segment internationally.

Why buy crossover over SUV?

The auto industry’s recent struggle keeps making headlines, but it isn’t exactly news anymore – sales have slumped, factories have shut down, and entire brands have been killed off. There is a bright spot, though, and as a result, many families are happily cruising in style.

  • The crossover segment has enjoyed staggering growth, with a sales increase that’s by far the highest in the industry, and automakers are still muddling the category with new contributions.
  • Today, there are upwards of 70 crossovers sold in the United States.
  • The term “crossover” came into the lexicon less than a decade ago, when car buyers didn’t really know what they were – but they bought them anyway.

What was once something of a catch-all category (tall wagons and sedans, rounded minivans, and compact SUVs) is now becoming more clearly defined despite a growing breadth of options. “Crossover” is now used almost interchangeably with “compact SUV,” but some new entries are pushing those boundaries.

When SUVs became the go-to family vehicle, a somewhat rugged ride was accepted as part of the experience. But over time, comfort fell back into favor, and now crossovers are appreciated for their improved ride and handling characteristics. Generally, crossover passengers ride in more comfort than an SUV would provide.

Because they’re based on car platforms, not trucks (like traditional SUVs), they tend to be more stable and easier to drive. They can maneuver through smaller spaces, stop more quickly, and are easier to park. Easy drivability and a cushy ride tell only part of the story, though.

  2. For the production model, designers and engineers in Cologne were responsible for the body design and C1 platform, the upper body and interior come from Detroit, and powertrains are manufactured by Ford Dagenham,

Is Ford Eco Sport a SUV?

Overview – The 2022 Ford EcoSport is a subcompact SUV with standard all-wheel drive and a 2000-pound tow rating. Those two things are the height of its talents. Even before Ford gave it a death sentence—due to business decisions abroad—the tiny ute struggled to compete in a segment full of alternatives that drove better, had nicer interiors, and were more fuel-efficient.

The EcoSport was never a very good value, and the introduction of the Ford Maverick pickup does it no favors. Not only is the small truck considerably more practical, it’s also less expensive and sips less fuel. The only reasons the 2022 EcoSport is worth a look, besides what was previously mentioned, are its lofty driving position and maneuverability.

Otherwise, it’s worth overlooking.
