The RWD Long Range will utilize a 150kW / 350Nm electric motor, giving it the ability to sprint from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 9.4 seconds (based on Kia’s preliminary data). “In many ways we consider the Kia EV9 to be the new flagship for our brand” The AWD version will obviously be more powerful, engaging two motors for a combined output of 283kW and 600Nm of torque, giving it a zero to 100 kilometers per hour acceleration of just six seconds.

The EV9 will also be Kia’s first vehicle to, the brand’s Level 3 autonomous driving system that allows for “unsupervised” driving on highways. Kia says it will achieve Level 3 “partial autonomy” thanks to the EV9’s array of 15 — that’s right, 15 — sensors, including two lidar laser sensors, cameras, radar, and ultrasonics. Highway Driving Pilot will be available on the EV9’s GT-line model in the future, and Kia says it will have more details to share at a later date.

But if Kia wants to seize the full-size electric SUV crown from the Tesla Model X, it will need to make a case for itself through its price. And unfortunately, Kia isn’t ready to talk about that yet. With most luxury three-row electric SUVs retailing for well over $100,000, there’s a real opportunity for Kia to slide in with a more affordable price.

The EV9 will have to start under $80,000 in order to compete with the Volvo EX90 and Rivian R1S, and even that’s not a guarantee — especially with Kia jamming a ton of tech and premium features into this thing. “Our brand will still be positioned to appeal to a wider audience,” Song said.

Those living in the U.S. travel a combined 4 trillion miles (6.4 trillion km) a year, roughly 14,500 miles (23,335 km) per person, so it’s hardly a surprise that Americans want EVs with big batteries that can get them around.

Indeed, Bloomberg notes that the average battery range of an EV sold in the U.S. has quadrupled since 2011 when the Nissan Leaf was the only widely available EV on sale offering up just 73 miles (117 km) of range. Tesla played a pivotal role in the introduction of longer-range electric vehicles in the United States and the expectations of American consumers has also grown.

In fact, almost two-thirds of respondents to a recent Bloomberg survey revealed that an EV with 300-plus miles of range was adequate for their needs. Less than 10 per cent of people surveyed said they would settle for an EV with 200 miles of range or less. Interestingly, just five electric vehicles accounted for 70 per cent of America’s total EV sales last year. These were the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model S, and Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The average range of these vehicles is 309 miles (497 km).

The average range of EVs in the U.S. has soared since 2014 when it was roughly the same as the global average. Indeed, Bloomberg data reveals that in 2014, the average global EV range sat at 130.5 miles (210 km) while the average EV range in the U.S. was 129.3 miles (208 km). In 2016, the global average rose to 144.8 miles (233 km) but increased to 187.4 miles (301.5 km) in the U.S.

This trend has continued and in 2021, the global average was 216.9 miles (349 km) while in the U.S. it was 286.8 miles (461 km).

If the new vehicle can deliver on its purported specs, it will represent a milestone moment in EV development. Automotive news website Motor1.com writes that the 2023 Zeeker 001 would be “the world’s longest-range production vehicle to our knowledge,” as the car would be capable of driving from Washington, D.C.

to Atlanta, Georgia on a single charge. Car and Driver, which maintains a list of the longest-range EVs on the market, currently ranks the 2022 Air from California carmaker Lucid as the top performer with a range of 520 miles. That’s more than 100 miles fewer than the 2023 Zeekr 001 — and the Zeekr model is approximately $125,000 less expensive,

How much range is enough for an EV?

This answer to the question above, “How much EV range is enough?,” depends on the individual and their needs and habits. I’ll start answering this question with some of my own background owning various electric cars. I’m also tackling the question of how big of a battery one needs.

I’ve owned Nissan LEAFs with ranges of 81 miles, 115 miles, and 150 miles. My first Nissan LEAF had a 24 kWh battery. I now own a Tesla Model 3 Long Range with an EPA range rating of 310 miles and a 75 kWh battery. The longest cross-country trip I dared to make with my 2 nd and 3 rd Nissan LEAFs was 265 miles.

Now I routinely make 1500 mile trips with my Model 3 driving 500 miles/day just like I did with my gasmobile. The electric GMC Hummer pictured above has an EPA range rating of 350 miles from a 200 kW battery. Because of its high weight and poor drag coefficient, its range is lower than that of a Tesla Model S even with a battery twice the size,

The average mileage driven by US car owners is about 40 miles a day, so some experts think an EV range of 200 miles should be adequate for most drivers. I recently met a man who takes this philosophy to the limit. He purchased a cheap, used, 81-mile-rated LEAF with a degraded battery that now has a range of only 40 miles.

His commute to work is 10 miles and he was able to get his employer to put in a charger, so the car works fine for his commute. He has another car that he uses if he wants to make longer trips. However, recently, at the Nephi Supercharger in Utah, I was chatting with a man in his 2021 Tesla Model X and he was complaining about having to charge too often.

He lives in Saint George in southern Utah and routinely makes the 310-mile trip to Salt Lake City on I-15 for business. He has to stop to charge twice to make the trip. His Model X has an EPA rating of 358 miles. Why can’t he make the whole trip without charging? I asked him how fast he goes. He said he sets the cruise to 84 mph for the whole trip.

The speed limit is 80 mph on most of I-15 on his route, so he’s not going to be pulled over by police. He didn’t seem to be aware that the aerodynamic drag on your car increases with the square of the speed D=Cv 2 where v is velocity. If you increase your speed from 75 mph to 85 mph, the drag force increases by 85×85/75×75 = 1.28, or nearly 30%.

  1. Someone, please confirm my math.) Conversely, if you drop your speed by 10 mph or more, in some cases, it could make the difference between making the next Supercharger or getting stranded.
  2. Tesla’s EPA range ratings are for combined city and highway driving.
  3. In my experience, you can’t get the Tesla EPA range for highway driving at speeds much more than 60 mph.

Nobody wants to travel that slow on Interstate highways in most states, though. Most people will go faster and stop more often. I personally limit my speed to 75 mph in my Model 3, except that I go 80 mph when passing a slower vehicle. The Tesla Model S and X have 100 kWh batteries.

  1. The Tesla Model S EPA range is 405 miles.
  2. The Model X is rated for 358 miles on a full charge because it is heavier and is less aerodynamically efficient.
  3. Elon Musk says that Tesla’s current lineup of S, 3, X, and Y cars have enough range and he will not be increasing the size of the batteries.
  4. Probably the biggest reason that Elon Musk won’t increase battery sizes in the current lineup is because he can’t get enough batteries.

It took 7 years from announcement to delivery of the first Tesla Semis. The Semi requires a huge battery pack. Most people think that the primary reason for the Semi delay was the difficulty in sourcing enough batteries. Another reason for not increasing the size of batteries is weight.

  1. Large EV batteries are very heavy, and therefore there is great incentive to limit battery size until battery technology improves.
  2. Factors that Reduce EV Range : The biggie — as explained above — is higher speed.
  3. The following environmental factors also come to mind: 1) increase in elevation, 2) headwind, 3) cold temperature, 4) snow and or slush on the road.

The following are reasons for lower EV range because of reduced aerodynamic efficiency and additional weight: 1) roof rack, 2) roof box, 3) bike rack, 4) trailer. Obviously, adding skis to the roof rack, gear in the roof box, and bikes on the bike rack will cause further range reduction.

  • Another factor that will reduce EV range is battery degradation.
  • These are all reasons for a bigger battery than your minimum requirements.
  • Battery Health : Lithium-ion batteries last longer if you limit your state of charge (SoC) to between 20% and 80%.
  • I follow this rule with my Model 3 because the battery is large enough that I have sufficient range for most trips.

With my first two LEAF vehicles, I would always charge to 100% because the range was so short that I needed to use the complete SoC range for nearly every trip. Faster Charging Speed with a Bigger Battery : The latest Tesla V3 Superchargers have a 250 kW maximum rate of charge.

When you put the next Supercharger destination into your navigation, your Tesla will precondition your battery for faster charging. If you arrive at the Supercharger with 10% SoC, your car will start charging at a rate of ~220 kW. However, once you reach a 50% SoC, the charging rate will drop to ~100 kW, and as you reach 80% and then 90% SoC, your charging rate will drop to ~50 kW and then go lower.

That means: the larger your battery, the faster it will charge. It will take longer to completely charge a bigger battery, but the miles gained per minute in the sweet spot will be greater with the bigger battery. So, the bottom line is that there are a lot of advantages to a bigger battery,

  1. Not only will you have greater inherent range, but your battery will charge faster and you will have a cushion for range reduction due to higher speed as well as environmental, aerodynamic, and battery degradation factors.
  2. Range Reduction due to Bikes on Rack : I generally travel cross country with two big mountain ebikes on my receiver-mounted bike rack (see Figure 2).

If you think about it, bikes on a bike rack destroy the aerodynamic efficiency that Tesla worked so hard to achieve. Even with the EPA range rating for my Tesla Model 3 Long Range being at 310 miles, it is a stretch for me to go more than 130 miles between charges carrying the bikes. Pulling a Trailer with an EV — Instant Torque : Electric motors have wonderful low-end torque.

  1. When you see a 150-car freight train, it may be pulled by as many as 5 diesel locomotives.
  2. However, train buffs know that these are really diesel-electric locomotives.
  3. The freight locomotives do have a diesel motor, but it only runs an electric generator, which powers the electric traction motors which turn the wheels.

Freight locomotives would find it very difficult to start 150 cars from dead stop if they had only diesel engines. I have experienced the equivalent pulling my 2500 lb competition ski boat out of the water with my little Tesla Model 3. I can barely feel the big ski boat come smoothly out of the water and up the steep ramp.

A friend has a huge 5 th wheel camper trailer that he pulls with his RAM pickup truck. He chose a Cummins 6-cylinder diesel engine because it has excellent torque for starting his rig and pulling it up steep grades. I think anyone who purchases a Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup, a Rivian pickup, or the future Tesla Cybertruck will be thrilled by the pulling power even with a heavy trailer and starting from a dead stop or climbing steep grades.

Pulling a Trailer with an EV — Range : However, I think anyone planning to pull a trailer with an EV will be very disappointed with the reduction in range. You are going to love pulling that big boat or trailer 10 miles up the mountain for the weekend. Which Electric Suv Has The Longest Range Figure 3: Estream electric drive trailer. Pulling a Trailer with an EV — Charging : As I said, for pulling a trailer with an EV, reduction of range is going to be a game stopper for anything but the smallest popup trailer. Let’s say you are pulling that tiny trailer — what happens when you get to a Supercharger? Tesla has come up with many brilliant solutions to engineering its EVs.

However, I don’t know how they ever thought that backing up to a Supercharger was a good idea. My Nissan LEAFs were inferior to my Tesla in almost every respect, but they had the charge port in the front of the car, which I loved. I absolutely hate backing up to a Supercharger. It’s extremely difficult with bikes on the back.

The electronic distance sensors are blocked by the bikes and I have to have my wife get out and tell me exactly how far to back up. If that’s not bad enough, how could you ever back up to a Supercharger with a trailer on back. A few Superchargers that I have used have one drive-by charging stall.

However, there is not enough room to drive by while pulling a trailer. I have seen photographs of Superchargers with drive-by stalls which would work for a vehicle pulling a trailer, but Superchargers like this are very rare at this point. What electric car has the longest range 1000 km?

Chinese car giant Geely has unveiled an electric car with a claimed 1000km driving range. Chinese car giant Geely has unveiled a vehicle it claims can travel 1032km on a single charge. Originally unveiled in 2021 with a claimed range of 700 kilometres, an updated version of the Zeekr 001 is claimed to cover more than 1000 kilometres following an upgrade to a 140kWh high-efficiency ‘ternary lithium’ battery from Chinese Amperex Technology Limited (CATL), which also supplies battery packs to Tesla. The Zeekr 001 has only been tested on the Chinese CTLC cycle, which is unlikely to provide a real-world range and is known to be less accurate than the WLTP cycle used in Europe. Still, the car won two awards in 2021 from Guinness World Records, for the fastest drift by an electric car – at 207.966km/h – and the fastest electric car slalom – at 49.05 seconds. The top-end YOU Edition has an optional sports package, costing $US5000 ($AU7100), which brings 22-inch forged alloy wheels, Brembo six-piston front brake calipers, an Alcantara interior and sports seats. The quicker of the Zeekr 001 models have a dual-motor four-wheel drive system with 400kW and 686 Nm for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds. The single-motor rear-drive version has 200 kW and 343 Nm, with either a 100 or 140kWh battery pack. The CATL battery is a third-generation design using ‘cell-to-pack’ technology to improve energy density, with storage of either 100 or 140 kWh, giving a claimed range of 741 or 1032 kilometres. Is there an electric car that can go 1000 miles?

The 1,000 mile range EV Aptera Motors is making a 1,000 mile range EV and this is going to change everything. It’s one of the most unique vehicles you will ever see and its efficiency blows every other EV out of the water. A 1,000 mile range EV is unheard of today as the average is anywhere between 200 to 300 miles, with higher end EVs at around 400 miles of range.

  • How is Aptera able to produce an EV with so much range? The answer is pretty simple.
  • They’ve created a lightweight EV that has 3 wheels, which reduced friction on the ground.
  • They’ve also made the weight of the EV about 50% of the average weighted EV.
  • They’ve also added solar panels to be built into the EV, further increasing range.

Cost and Future of EVs When you look at buying an Aptera EV, you have to realize the cost of it. The lowest end model will be sold for $25,900. This is with a range of 250 miles. This is a very small and simple EV. The 400 range model has a base cost of $29,800.

  1. The 600 mile range Aptera has a range of $34,600 and the 1,000 mile range version costs $44,900.
  2. A young person who has home charging will be able to afford the $25,900 EV.
  3. You can also add solar panels to the roof, dashboard, hood, and rear hatch for $900.
  4. There are solar panels on the roof and dashboard for free.

These solar panels will help keep the car charged while driving or while parked outside. There are 3 wheels on the car and one thing that I wonder is how this will handle objects and rocks on the road as well as pot holes. Will this cause problem with the vehicle due to it having 3 wheels? The design for the Aptera is a dome shape.

  1. With the 1,000 range version, most likely you will never have to charge, especially if you live in a sunny area.
  2. Still, Aptera is a new company and most likely they are going to go through the same growing pains any new company goes through.
  3. To reach volume production is a truly difficult thing.

Will electric cars have 1000 mile range?

The race is on to build the most efficient electric car. This alone is worth taking note of, as only a few years back, most major carmakers seemed to be in silent agreement that ranges of around 200 miles would meet most people’s everyday driving needs and convince them to switch to electric models.

Well, reality struck hard, a new phobia – range anxiety – was born, and the industry had to adapt. All the more reason for a quick stocktaking on where things stand today. For many years, Tesla TSLA has proven its ability to innovate while delivering long(er) ranges at scale. Hence, it’s no surprise that two models from Tesla, Model S and Model 3, rank among the top three of the world’s longest-range production EVs available today, going 405 and 358 miles respectively on a single charge.

More of a surprise is the fact that Tesla recently got dethroned by a newcomer, Lucid, which records an impressive 520 miles, Looking a little bit further down the Top 30 list, one thing becomes quite apparent: incremental changes still seem to be the norm as most current cars offer mediocre ranges of under 300 miles under optimal conditions.

Aptera’s new Solar Electric Vehicle Aptera Quantum leaps are on the horizon – with newcomers leading the way Thankfully, there are great examples of quantum leap innovations on the vehicle level which will result not only in hugely efficient EVs but will lead to a radical change in the entire user experience.

Take Mercedes Benz. In June of this year, Chief Executive Ola Källenius proudly reported a range of 1,202 km (about 747 miles) on a single charge between Stuttgart, Germany and Silverstone, UK, for their concept car, the EQXX. This recent test drive was the second time it exceeded the 1000 kilometres range, solidifying its world record status in ‘real-world’ testing.

That’s impressive! Customers will have to remain patient, though, as the first production models of the EQXX will not be available before 2024. But even with the EQXX’s stunning performance there is competition already brewing. Again, it is newcomers that are leading the way. One of them is Aptera Motors from San Diego, whose solar electric car is offering a mind blowing 1,000 miles range per charge (1.600 kilometres).

Yes, that’s right, 1,000 miles! Importantly, that’s not simply a promise for the distant future, as Aptera is moving quickly toward final production readiness, Their first consumer vehicle is set to launch this year from an 80,000 sqm production facility in Carlsbad, California.

  1. Lightyear 0 – The global premiere of the world’s first solar car – June 9 2022 – Bart Geers Another newcomer to watch is Lightyear One from the Netherlands.
  2. Just recently, on June 9, Lightyear One officially launched its first production vehicle, the Lightyear 0, which will be delivered to the first customers from November of this year.

The Lightyear 0’s powertrain reaches an incredible 97% efficiency level, A glimpse of what to expect was given last winter, when Lightyear tested one of its prototype cars on a Bridgestone track in Aprilia, Northern Italy. The test took place under suboptimal conditions – with outside temperatures around 50⁰F (10 degrees Celsius), and at a constant high speed of 81 mph (130 kilometres per hour).

  1. Still, the prototype car reached over 250 miles (400+ kilometres) on a single charge with a relatively small 60 KWh battery ( similar to VW’s ID.3 with a real range of 170 miles ).
  2. And the optimization work was far from finished then.
  3. Solar integration and better aerodynamics are key to performance So HOW is all of this possible? Unsurprisingly it is a combination of significant technological advancements, one of which being – the integration of solar.

The EQXX for example features 117 solar cells on its roof to increase range and efficiency, Newcomers like Lightyear and Aptera even aim for grid independence. With 5m2 (53 ft2) of solar roof panels, the Lightyear 0 for example enables up to 12k miles (20,000 km ) per year, and the Aptera 14,6k miles per year – powered solely from the sun.

Although solar generates a relatively small amount of energy, it can make a meaningful addition to range – if the vehicle has a low energy spend per kilometer. Also immediately apparent, and even more meaningful in terms of efficiency, are the enhanced aerodynamics. Looking at the so called drag coefficient (Cd), which measures the amount of resistance an object encounters as it moves, Mercedes-Benz’s EQXX reached a benchmark of 0.17,

Aptera claims even better with 0.13 due to its unorthodox dolphin-like shape. These are impressive figures that easily knock all existing production EVs out of the park. In-wheel motors – a paradigm shift in overall car design But in the case of Aptera and Lightyear, there is one often overlooked component, which, quite literally, drives not only their performance but has a huge impact on the entire car design.

And that’s their in-wheel motors, Yes, these motors are placed directly in the wheel, or, more precisely, in the rim. The concept is far from new. In fact, Ferdinand Porsche himself equipped an electric vehicle with in-wheel drives for the 1900 Paris exposition. However, back then, centralized combustion engines were superior across key technical characteristics like weight, noise, and overall performance.

(Photo by, Fine Art Images/Heritage Images/Getty Images) Getty Images But today, some 120 years later, as we’re entering a new electrified, sustainable era of mobility, the fundamentals have in many ways turned upside down, making in-wheel motors the logical choice for the future (solar) electric cars for the masses.

  • The reasons are simple: for one, in-wheel motors generate power directly where it is needed most.
  • This practically eliminates mechanical losses, results in high torque and, in turn, maximum efficiency and range.
  • Moreover, it improves the handling, maneuverability, and hence, security for the driver.
  • Since in-wheel motors make do with much less components than their centralized relatives, the car becomes lighter, which again increases efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

More than that, in-wheel powertrains free up significant space in the car. This allows for drastically different form factors – opening up the playing field for car designers who can focus even more on the user experience. And since distributed powertrains are modular in nature, leveraging to a large extent standard parts, they can significantly drive down overall manufacturing costs, and be quickly integrated into new vehicles.

Not only can this result in a wider range of cars, but it will accelerate the journey from the drawing board to actually driving. Lightyear One Only a few specialized in-wheel motor suppliers ready for uptick in demand While (presumably) all large carmakers are therefore looking into ways to tap into that potential, only a few highly specialized companies offer solutions ready for integration into production cars.

Here are two examples. One of the pioneers in the space is a company from Slovenia, called Elaphe Propulsion Technologies, One of their founders, a quantum physicist, started to work on in-wheel technology all the way back in the late 80s before co-founding Elaphe in 2006.

  • This company backed by European cleantech investor EIT InnoEnergy has recently moved quickly from operating behind the scenes to taking centerstage.
  • After starting a partnership with Lordstown Motors in 2020, a few weeks ago both Aptera and Lightyear One announced Elaphe as their in-wheel powertrain supplier for their solar electric production cars.

The multi-year deal with Aptera alone is worth several hundred million USD. To accommodate the expected uptick in demand, Elaphe is currently expanding their existing factory in Slovenia to volume-ready scale, aiming to be able to produce up to 100,000 units per year.

  1. In the medium term, Elaphe plans to open up another production facility in the US.
  2. Another contender is Protean Electric, which was founded in the UK in 2008.
  3. In late 2021, Protean got acquired by British EV maker Bedeo, taking over from Saab successor NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden) who felt the effects of their parent company, Chinese Real Estate giant Evergrande, almost sliding into bankruptcy.

Together, Bedeo and Protean plan to develop new EV platforms for commercial vehicles and passenger cars using in-wheel motors. This could help put them in a good position to grab some share of the estimated USD 4,4 billion market (by 2026) for in-wheel powertrains.
